Never one to disappoint

I've been a fan of Kris since middle school when I first discovered his writing and photos online. When his first piece Loose Tooth//Lost Youth came out I was quick to jump and purchase that. That was a while back and when news came out about this I felt that excitement all over again. Quick to preorder, I was lucky enough to get the book in the mail 2 days later and dived right into it. Just as every piece that comes out of him, these stories all held this raw intensity that could not only evoke what I describe as heavy humor because thats just what it is. Graced with the ability to make you laugh and make those thoughts in the back of your mind creep up, any piece of writing made by Kris helps you see into his own struggles and reflect a little on your own. These stories are a prime example of why I've been a fan for over 4 years now. Ive already recommended this to a bunch of friends (and have happily converted them into fans as well).

I was quite excited to read this and I ended up disappointed. Don't get me wrong, some of the entries we're alright. Most of it is just rambling from what I recall. I also didn't expect such a thin book! I expected a lot of more content, I don't know if that was just me? Returning anyway.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
In most North American academic medical centers, the departments of gastroenterology and hepatology coexist in an uneasy relationship somewhat akin to a dysfunctional marriage. In previous editions this voluminous textbook was limited to the subject of gastroenterology, in recognition of the fact that there were, and still are, outstanding reference books on hepatology. With this edition, the editors, in including 361 pages dedicated to liver disease, have tacitly recognized that divorce is not imminent and that much of the care of patients with liver disease is provided by physicians trained primarily as gastroenterologists. The result is a "one-stop shopping" reference book of authoritative information on both gastroenterology and hepatology. There is some emphasis on unusual problems and major recent advances, as befits such a reference book. Carcinoid tumors are given more space than is irritable bowel syndrome, and parasitic infections are given more than carcinoid tumors and irritable bowel combined.

The two volumes are generally well organized and make extensive use of tables, graphs, and algorithms to convey much of the information. The referencing and indexing are better than those of previous editions, and more comprehensive. There are rare references to literature published more recently than 1995, but some almost prophetic cautions are expressed about what is likely to come. The chapter on obesity provides a prescient warning about the lack of approval by the Food and Drug Administration of long-term fenfluramine-phentermine therapy.

The outlines at the beginning of each of the 200 chapters are almost redundant, since there are boldly typed subheadings throughout each (usually short) chapter, and the same information is duplicated in the table of contents, which is reproduced in both volumes. Most of the pathological photomicrographs are of high quality and relevant, but some radiographic reproductions require the eye of faith to see what is purported to be illustrated. There is frequent reference to a companion color atlas that will not be available to many readers. The absence of color photographs of some of the more unusual endoscopic findings is a bit disappointing.

As in any multiauthored textbook, there are some outstanding chapters and a few that are difficult and dry. The discussions of ascites in liver diseases, colonic polyps and the polyposis syndromes, and Helicobacter pylori infection should be read by any author interested in learning how to convey pragmatic information concisely and lucidly. Similar precision is sadly lacking in other areas, most notably in the discussions of the use or misuse of vitamin K in treating coagulopathies in liver disease and the investigational approach to nausea and vomiting. Intestinal electrolyte physiology and pathways in liver biochemistry are difficult topics to present in a way that is interesting and relevant to clinicians, and the authors of the chapters on these subjects did not succeed. There are inevitable gaps and overlaps and a few contradictions. Two chapters provide emphatically opposing statements about the validity of guaiac tests of stool obtained during or after digital rectal examination, both supported by references to current literature. The importance of the findings of physical examinations is not presented in any single chapter. I could not answer my resident's question about the importance of detecting fetor hepaticus by consulting this book, since this condition is not mentioned. Nor will you learn to recognize portal hypertensive colopathy by looking it up here, since its only appearance is in a list in a table.

The preface suggests that the target audience for this book includes general internists, trainees in gastroenterology and surgery, and medical students, as well as gastroenterologists. The size of the book alone, however, makes it likely that the only cover-to-cover readers will be trainees preparing for examinations and reviewers. The rest of us involved in the practice of gastroenterology and hepatology and teachers in these fields would do well to have this standard vade mecum on the shelf to consult when we encounter an unfamiliar, unusual, or difficult clinical problem. Overall, it lives up to its reputation as the dominant textbook of gastroenterology.

Truely a Work of Art !!!

There was a lacuna in the field of gastroenterology but with the introduction of this masterpiece, that gap too has been filled. Amazing insight and utmost simplicity of presentation has made this a prized posession, at least in my collection and I hope that it will be so for many many people across the globe.

This is a must....

This book is a must for ANY professional working in the finished-goods/products Fulfillment/Distribution world. If your work and responsibilities span anywhere within a FC/DC, you should pick up this book. For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.

It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.

I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .

Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.

Great warehousing and material handling book

This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.

Great book for the novice, rookie, and veteran.

After having rollers as a boy and now being the new guy to the hobby once again, I gained a lot of information from Dave's book. He gives a lot of good tips from the basics of building your kit box and loft(s), obtaining birds of good quality and how to approach a fancier on the matter, to breeding birds and even eye sign. I found his chapter on night flying very interesting. And in today's day and age I really found the internet links to be very helpful as well. I will put a lot of the information in this book to good use and reference back to it through out my experience with these beautiful birds. I recommend getting this book if you are a beginner such as myself, or even a veteran. I am sure you will find some useful tips to add to your arsenal. It is new age with up to date information coming from a man with many years of experience in the hobby of BR.

Birmingham roller a performance breed

This book is a great source of information. It covers all topics from understanding the roller pigeon, acquiring your stock, to creating your own family of roller pigeons. I really enjoyed learning more about roller pigeons from an expert like Dave, who is a superb representative of what the sport is really about. Thank you for sharing your expertise with all of us who care about the roller pigeon sport/hobby. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who is interested in the roller pigeon sport/hobby.

Gary Zimak is a full-time Catholic evangelist and author. He is a frequent speaker at parishes and conferences across the country and is widely known for his talks on overcoming anxiety. Gary hosts a daily radio show on BlogTalkRadio and is a regular guest on Catholic Answers Live, EWTN’s The Son Rise Morning Show, and Catholic Connection with Teresa Tomeo. A member of Catholics United for the Faith, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Radio Association, he is an RCIA instructor at Sacred Heart Parish in Riverton, New Jersey, and the chaplain for the Catholic Business Network of South Jersey. Gary resides in New Jersey with his wife, Eileen, and twin daughters, Mary and Elizabeth.

Discerning God's will

Seeking God's will is not something that's done once or twice in a lifetime, writes Gary Zimak in Faith Hope & Clarity. The author points out that we have an opportunity to turn to the Lord for help with major and minor decisions every day.

Zimak uses his own experience throughout the book, citing the steps he took to transition from a successful computer programmer to a full-time Catholic evangelist. He also writes about ways he and his wife reached decisions related to their children--first, a serious health issue with a newborn and later the choice to home school their daughters. His key to discovering God's will is a combination of common sense and willingness to hear and listen to what God is saying.

The book covers major elements of discernment including the role of the Church, prayer, and spiritual direction. Chapters close with a list of key points and reflection questions, making this a useful resource for faith-sharing groups as well as individuals. Sample key points:
* Trying to determine what God wants us to do is a process that takes time.
* If God wants us to know something, he will reveal it to us.
* The fact that difficulties arise in our plan doesn't mean it isn't God's will; he often allows us to struggle in order to increase our faith.
* To truly discover God's will, we must decide that what he wants is more important than what we want.
* Sometimes God's will involves doing things that we would rather avoid.
* It is never God's will that we disobey the commands of his church.

Zimak also sketches several general situations that occur during discernment and offers suggestions for dealing with them. If you feel that the Lord wants you to do something different, but don't know what that is, it may not be time to move. If you have an idea what God wants but the plan doesn't provide a way to support yourself and your family, Zimak recommends staying put for the time being.

This is a great book and I highly recommend it

This is a great book and I highly recommend it! I really enjoyed reading it. I love that it is easy to read and understand. Gary taught me how it is possible to have a true personal relationship with Jesus and the steps I need to take to ultimately discern His will for me. His step by step approach makes it easy for anyone to know how grow closer to God and to discern God's will for them in their life. Gary Zimak is a great author and this is one book that I will read again and again. Thank you Gary Zimak for writing this book! It is a true blessing. God Bless you!

Good but falls short of the "Clarity" promised.

Good but falls short of "Clarity" promised. Excellent writing style. Highly readable. However, when it comes to providing clarity on the most important factors used to confirm the most difficult discernments, Gary punts. He fails to address how and when "signs" can be sought or relied upon (Isaiah 7:11; Judges 6:39; Genesis 24:13, etc). In fact, he pretty much ignored that key topic relative to discernments, although it's a vital tool for those seeking "clarity" when seemingly being asked by God to take steps in life that are both radical and presumably imprudent. Likewise, Gary fails to provide clarity on the key topic of how to distinguish between an inner voice that is from the Lord, versus from oneself or the devil. Except to say that God won't ever ask you to sin, and to suggest that inner peace should accompany the Lord's voice, he doesn't give any of the other criteria commonly taught by other authors on the subject. In short, Gary was short on detailed guidance and clarity, but long on very readable anecdotes.
