From the Inside Flap
Purpose of this book

This book was born out of our experience in teaching practically oriented courses in digital signal processing (DSP) to undergraduate students at the University of Plymouth and the Sheffield Hallam University, and to application engineers in industry for many years. It appeared to us that many of the available textbooks were either too elementary or too theoretical to be of practical use for undergraduates or application engineers in industry. As most readers will know from experience, the gap between learning the fundamentals in any subject and actually applying them is quite wide. We therefore decided to write this book which we believe undergraduates will understand and appreciate and which will equip them to undertake practical digital signal processing assignments and projects. We also believe that higher degree students and practising engineers and scientists will find this text most useful.

Our own research work over the last two decades in applied DSP has also inspired the contents, by identifying practical issues for discussion and presentation to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation, and by suggesting application examples, case studies, and problems.

The current great interest and developments in DSP both in industry and academia are likely to continue for the foreseeable future. The availability of numerous digital signal processors recognizes the commercial potential of DSP. Its major attraction lies in the ability to achieve guaranteed accuracy and perfect reproducibility, and in its inherent flexibility compared with analogue signal processing. In industry, many engineers lack the necessary knowledge and expertise in DSP to utilize the immense potential of the very powerful digital signal processors now available off the shelf. This book provides insight and practical guidance to enable engineers to design and develop practical DSP systems using these devices.

In academia, DSP is generally regarded as one of the more mathematical topics in the electrical engineering curriculum, and based on our experiences of teaching we have reduces the mathematical content to what we consider useful, essential, and interesting; we have also emphasized points of difficulty. Our experiences indicate that students learn best if they are aware of the practical relevance of a subject, and while more theoretical texts are essential for completeness and reference as the student matures in the subject, we believe in producing graduates equipped also with practical knowledge and skills. This book was written with these considerations in mind.

The book is not a comprehensive text on DSP, but it covers most aspects of the subject found in undergraduate electrical, electronic or communication engineering degree courses. A number of DSP techniques which are of particular relevance to industry are also covered and in a few years, we believe, these will find their way into undergraduate curricula. These include techniques such as adaptive filtering and multirate processing.

The emphasis throughout the book is on the practical aspects of DSP. C language programs are provided to enable readers to explore the concepts presented in the book, to design and analyse their own DSP systems, and to gain a deeper understanding of DSP.

Commercial DSP software is available and plays a key role in the design and analysis of DSP systems. However, with most commercial software, it is difficult actually to find out or follow how a given operation is performed. The programs given in this book are useful in verifying results obtained manually. For example, by inserting break points the user can check the intermediate results of computation and follow the way the computation is made. Having acquired a sound knowledge of the principles, commercial software packages with good graphics support and user-friendly interfaces may then be used in most designs.

Contains many end-of-chapter problems.

Use of realistic examples to illustrate important concepts and to reinforce

the knowledge gained.

The intended audience

The book is aimed at engineering, science and computer science students, and application engineers and scientists in industry who wish to gain a working knowledge of DSP. In particular, final year students studying for a degree in electronics, electrical or communication engineering will find the book valuable for both taught courses as well as their project work, as increasingly a greater proportion of student project work involves aspects of DSP. Postgraduates studying for a master's degree or PhD in the above subjects will also find the book useful.

Undergraduate students will find the fundamental topics very attractive and, we believe, the book will be a valuable source of information both throughout their course as well as when they go into industry.

Large commercial or government organizations who undertake their own internal DSP short courses could base them on the book. We believe the book will serve as a good teaching text as well as a valuable self-learning text for undergraduate, graduate and application engineers.

Contents and organization

Chapter 1 contains an overview of DSP and its applications to make the reader aware of the meaning of DSP and its importance. The chapter presents, from a practical point of view using real-world examples, many fundamental topics which form the cornerstone of DSP, such as sampling and quantization of signals and their implications in real-time DSP. Discrete-time signals and systems are introduced in this chapter, and discussed further in Chapter 3.

Discrete transforms, particularly the discrete and fast Fourier transforms (FFT), provide important mathematical tools in DSP as well as relating the time and frequency domains. They are introduced and described in Chapter 2 with a discussion of some applications to put them in context. The derivation of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) from the Fourier transform and the exponential Fourier series provides a logical justification for the DFT which does not require coverage of the discrete Fourier series which would unnecessarily increase the length of the book (and the amount of work for the student!). The discussion has also been restricted to the description and implementation of the transforms. In particular, the topic of windowing has not been included in this chapter but is more appropriately discussed in detail in Chapter 10 on spectrum analysis.

In Chapter 3 the basics of discrete-time signals and systems are discussed. Important aspects of the z-transform, an invaluable tool for representing and analysis discrete-time signals and systems, are discussed. Many applications of the z-transform are highlighted, for example its use in the design, analysis and computation of the frequency response of discrete-time signals and systems. As in the rest of the book, the concepts as well as applications of the z-transform are illustrated with fully worked examples.

Correlation and convolution are fundamental and closely related topics in DSP and are covered in depth in Chapter 4. The authors consider an awareness of all the contents of this chapter to be essential for DSP, but after a preliminary scanning of the contents the reader may well be advised to build up his or her detailed knowledge by progressing through the chapter in stages. The contents might well be spread over several years of an undergraduate course.

Chapters 5, 6 and 7 include detailed practical discussions of digital filter design, one of the most important topics in DSP, being at the core of

Good book. But the correlation /SNR theory are too old
By A Customer
This is a great book. I will encourage any one doing DSP to read this book. However, some of the theories described in this book are too old In recent years, there are many important new developments in DSP algorithms. For example, the correlation-signal theory described in this book is fundamentally incorrect (p 199 to p206). Recently, Guo Mian et. al. developed autocorrelation signal to noise ratio (ACSNR) algorithm to percisely determine the Signal to noise ratio(SNR) for an arbitary data sequence in time domain using correlation method. ( IEEE Trans. Magn.Vol. 29, pp. 3999. Nov. 1993). Signal and the noise can be percisely determined by the correlation function. This method has been widely used in digital recording/telecommunication industies. It has also been implemented in LeCroy digital scopes. I will encourage the author revise his book in the new edition.

This book is only OK
By Amazon Customer
This book is OK. Its not a very good book as an introduction in my opinion. If you are a new student to DSP I would steer clear of this book and get Oppenheim & Schafer or Proakis & Manolakis first. However, if you are looking for practical coding examples for things, this book is VERY good in that regard. It could be useful to the new student as an alternate reference.

America 1844: Religious Fervor, Westward Expansion, and the Presidential Election That Transformed the Nation, by John Bicknell

The presidential election of 1844 was one of the two or three most momentous elections in American history. Had Henry Clay won instead of James K. Polk, we’d be living in a very different country today. Polk’s victory cemented the westward expansion that brought Texas, California, and Oregon into the union. It also took place amid religious turmoil that included anti-Mormon and anti-Catholic violence, and the “Great Disappointment,” in which thousands of followers of an obscure preacher named William Miller believed Christ would return to earth in October 1844.

Author and journalist John Bicknell details even more compelling, interwoven events that occurred during this momentous year: the murder of Joseph Smith, the religious fermentation of the Second Great Awakening, John C. Frémont’s exploration of the West, Charles Goodyear’s patenting of vulcanized rubber, the near-death of President John Tyler in a freak naval explosion, and much more. All of these elements illustrate the competing visions of the American future—Democrats versus Whigs, Mormons versus Millerites, nativists versus Catholics, those who risked the venture westward versus those who stayed safely behind—and how Polk’s election cemented the vision of a continental nation.

Review

“A historical treasure trove recorded with verve and insight.  Fascinating tales of an era and personalities you thought you knew—but didn't until now.” —David Pietrusza, historian and author of 1920: The Year of Six Presidents "'America 1844' is an interesting effort by Bicknell, an editor at Congressional Quarterly, to find the long-term significance in one year in American history.” —Standard Examiner "John Bicknell shows us that our modern problems can often pale in comparison to the issues that afflicted the nation at other points in its long and often turbulent history." —BookTrib

“A thrilling chronicle of America in a critical year.  In an ambitious young republic, some saw a limitless future while others believed the world was coming to an end.  In Bicknell's skilled hands this incredible cast of characters, presidents and prophets alike, come to life in all of their glory. Don't miss this riveting story of political warfare and westward expansion.” —Chris DeRose, award winning author of The Presidents' War, Congressman Lincoln, and Founding Rivals

"In this elegantly researched and lively narrative, John Bicknell tells the story of 1844, a pivotal year for a muscular young nation pressing forward on multiple fronts even as the struggle over slavery looms larger. Giants like Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun share the spotlight with a spectrum of colorful and captivating personalities, among them President John Tyler, presidential aspirant James K. Polk, firearms expert Samuel Colt, explorer John C. Fremont and religious leaders Joseph Smith and William Miller." —Guy Gugliotta, author of Freedom's Cap: The United States Capitol and the Coming of the Civil War

"The year 1844 stands as a hinge moment in U.S. history, when powerful developments converged upon the country in politics, in diplomacy, in religion, in exploration, and in technology. In sprightly and robust prose, John Bicknell narrates this pivotal year by capturing the virtues, foibles and remarkable endeavors of giant figures—Henry Clay, James Polk, Thomas Benton, Samuel Morse, Charles Goodyear, John Fremont, Joseph Smith, and many more. This book is as enjoyable as it is enlightening.” —Robert W. Merry, author of A Country of Vast Designs: James K. Polk, the Mexican War, and the Conquest of the American Continent

"Politics, religion, slavery, diplomacy and the annexation of Texas. John Bicknell's woven together the forces that drove American expansion into a thoroughly engaging narrative that wraps the reader into his abiding fascination with our history and reminds us of how much is at stake in our political fights." — Jonathan Allen, co-author of HRC: State Secrets and the Rebirth of Hillary Clinton

“Bicknell’s consideration of this watershed in American history is solid…Bicknell’s brisk work is still an accessible and informative take on antebellum American politics.” —Publishers  Weekly

“An entertaining account of a single year of unexceptional significance.” —Kirkus Reviews

“A fast-moving, easily digestible account of that year, and Bicknell does a fine job of explaining the issues, the personalities, and the shifting political trends that made the period tumultuous. Bicknell offers interesting vignettes with insights… [and] provide[s] a useful portrait of the antebellum nation that is aimed at general readers.” —Booklist

“This very complex exploration is written for a general audience, relying heavily on historic newspapers of the time. The intersections of religious movements with national politics will be of interest to many readers.” —Library Journal

“Bicknell has a smooth style and dry wit and is an able guide through a weird time in American history.” —CQRollCall.com

Interesting, informative and concise
By Rule 62 Ken
1844 was an election year in the United States, but there was much more happening in the nation than politicking. Expansionism and a desire for a better life sent many Americans westward, to face harsh weather, rigorous travel conditions and unpredictability. New inventions were being developed that would transform and enhance Americans' way of life. Incumbent "accidental president" John Tyler maintained feint hope of holding his office. Religious evolution and tensions were occurring, complete with zealots, bigots, the devout, and the rise of new sects. New immigrants came into conflict with those espousing intense nationalism and anti-immigrant sentiments. And then there was Texas and the divergence between those who wanted to annex it and those who feared the consequences of such an act. All of these factors contributed to the outcome of one of the most fascinating Presidential elections in history, and to the future that the 68 year young nation would soon experience.

In America 1844: Religious Fervor, Western Expansionism and the Presidential Election That Transformed The Nation, author John Bicknell displays a remarkable appreciation of the fact that to truly understand what elections are all about, one must look at more than just the speeches and promises of politicians and their parties. While an election is occurring, life happens, and life in 1844 was fascinating.

An apocryphal Chinese curse is said to translate as "may you live in interesting times" and 1844 was a most interesting year. Religion was at the center of much of the contemporary cultural upheaval. Preacher and Adventist forefather William Miller and his Millerites prophetically predicted that the end of the world would occur in October of 1844, a message strongly embraced by a surprising number of people. Catholics in Philadelphia faced strong and violent religious prejudice from nativists, leading to the Philadelphia Nativist Riots. Joseph Smith and the Mormons also confronted violent religious bigotry amid Smith's campaign for the presidency. John Bicknell provides the reader with an excellent understanding of these and other religious based occurrences, explaining both their specific details, and their significance to everything else that was happening in 1844.

An excellent component of this book is the author's description of exactly what western migration entailed. He does so by having the reader travel along with a number of hardy souls who made the trek west, including soldier and explorer John C. Fremont, mountain man James Clyburn, the Sager family (who experienced significant tragedy on route) and resilient teenager Moses Schallenberger. The experiences of these travelers provides the reader with a far greater appreciation of the hazards of such an onerous journey than any generic description of what it was like for those who made the trek west.

John Bicknell's brilliance as an author can be seen from how much information he is able to convey in only 257 pages. I learned a tremendous amount of information from this book and am amazed at the author's ability to convey that information so succinctly and yet so thoroughly. Bicknell also earns high marks as an analyst. His post-mortem of the failed campaign of Henry Clay in the election of 1844 is excellent, and I appreciated this book's epilogue in which the author not only fills the reader in on the subsequent lives of the major subjects of the book, but also explains why their actions in 1844 were important to how the nation unfolded in the years leading to the civil war. Most impressive for me was his profound analysis of how history might have taken a completely different path if Henry Clay had run a smarter campaign and won the election of 1844.

In this book John Bicknell proves that excellent history does not have to be voluminous and wordy to be intelligent, informative and a pleasure to read. I thoroughly enjoyed America 1844 and highly recommend it to readers with an interest in history from slight to great who appreciate good writing that entertains and informs concurrently and concisely.

Insight into a Year that is often overlooked
By Casey Wheeler
I received a prerelease e-copy of this book through NetGalley (publication date October 14, 2014) with the expectation that I will post a review on their site and others (my blog, Goodreads, Facebook, Google +, LinkedIn, Twitter, Amazon, etc.).

I requested this book as I have an interest in American History. This is the first book by John Bicknell that I have read.

I found this book well written and researched. In addition, it was an interesting read about a time period that is often overlooked. I have read other books about this time period, but the focus has always been on the events that occured during James Polk's presidency and not the period immediately before he took office.

I particularly found the parts about John Tyler's attempts to gain a second term, Henry Clay's efforts to avoid losing votes and James Polk's tight rope walking to stay out of the fray very interesting. The author also wove in other events that contributed to the expansion of the United States such as the wagon trains to Oregon and California and the implementation of the telegraph.

The book also reinforced that politics is politics and that the manipulation to stay in power or gain power has changed little over the course of time with the exception of the tools that are used.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the events leading up to the Mexican War and the expansion of the United States. I also recommend it to those who are interested in following the course of politics and political manipulation in our country.

As the sub-title of the work indicates, Bicknell has endeavored to combine three disparate themes into a single volume, with the result that readers are left with a slight confusion: one has to jump from millerism to the westward wagon trail, and then to the presidential election. Does the author try to provide readers with a snapshot of America in the year 1844, rather than the continuing westward migration flows of the entire 1840's? The tear-jerking description of Naomi at her death-bed (p. 205) is superb in this Westward, Ho! non-fiction.

Scotch may be the most popular whisky in the world today, but over a century ago, it was Irish whiskey which was most commonly drunk throughout the world. At the time of writing only three producing units exist at Midleton, Co Cork; Bushmills, Co Antrim and Cooley at Dundalk, Co Louth. In this book, Brian Townsend has meticulously researched the lost distilleries of Ireland and details what happened to them. In part I, he relates the origins of distilling in Ireland (an Arabic hand-down to Irish monks); the links with Scotland; the wild years when illicit distilling was rampant and shebeens proliferated as corruption increased; the coming of legitimacy and temperance; the development of the Coffey still (which ultimately helped to sink the industry); the golden years; and, prohibition in the USA and the emergence of the Free State in 1922. In part II, each distillery is listed and accompanied with archive photos and etchings. The list will include: Bow Street, John's Lane, Thomas Street, Marrowbone Lane, Jones Road and Phoenix Park (all Dublin); Monasterevan, Co Kildare; Tullamore, Brusna and Birr (all Co Offaly); Nun's Island, Galway; Limerick, Co Limerick; North Mall, Cork; Midleton, Glen and Bandon (all Co Cork); Bishop's Water, Wexford; Dundalk, Co Louth; Royal Irish, Avoniel and Irish, Belfast; Upper and Lower, Comber, Co Down; and, Coleraine and Limavady, Co Londonderry and Abbey Street and Waterside, Londonderry. Black and white contemporary and archive photographs accompany the text.

The Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) is an admission test for an increasing number of courses at an increasing number of universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. The emphasis of the TSA is very much on thinking skills, and the amount of knowledge required is minimal. This means that the best way to prepare is to develop your thinking skills by working through a large number of TSA-style questions. You should look upon the TSA not only as a means to stand out from your competition, but also as an opportunity to hone your thinking skills, which are going to be far more important to your future impact and wellbeing than any facts that you could ever learn. As BF Skinner once put it, ‘Education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten.’ This book, written by an Oxford tutor and writer, covers all aspects of the TSA, including problem-solving, critical thinking, and the writing task. The bulk of the book consists of three full-length mock papers, each followed by fully explained answers to the questions asked.

Talks about serious issues
By A Customer
This book has been professionally written by Mr. Harrison, which talks about what Baluch nationalism really meant. The author really tries to talk about the issues rather than the made up theories about nationalism. Being a baluch in the decade of innovation and globalization, it really helped me understand the why the Baluchs took on the Pakistan army; not for personal glory but for a cause most people in Pakistan do not want to understand and don't understand.
The interviews with Baluchi tribal leaders, really gives the book the authencity the most other books miss out on. What really impressed me, was the authors commitment, when he interviewed Baluchi guerilla fighters, rather than telling the same old stories about them for an outsiders prespective. Although I know that most people, have never even heard of the Baluchi people, but anyone who ever gets interested in the Baluchi people and their issues should read this book as it explains from scrath the ideology behind the Baluchi struggle for both idependence and justice by the hands of other Pakistanis. And the brief but informative chapter in the begining gives a good back ground to the origins of the Baluchi people.
