It's a little science and history geek-y, and whole lot of imagination.

Since I had read the Unwind Dystology before this, the cycle of "death-rebirth-second death-restoratio-and so on and so forth" rings familiar, but nonetheless in a different way.

At the end of the day, the same things that give life meaning prevail - and these are, purpose, love, and acknowledgment of the Almighty.

I actually got my 8- and 9-yo's to start this series - so I can recommend this to middle-grade kids, provided that parents are there to discuss any questions that may arise. This is definitely thought-provoking, book essay-type material.

Great books, great product.

YES. This is true perfection. It was sealed, and each book is new and crisp as they should be. The sleeve/case thing they're in is beautiful, and the books themselves are some of my favorites, content wise.

From School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—In this series opener, 10-year-old Tyler "Tiger" Brooks and his family have just moved into a new house. When his four-year-old sister Maggie tells him she saw a pig in a top hat outside, he scoffs…but sure enough, when he follows his remote-controlled helicopter into his neighbor's yard, he meets Chives, the talking pig who acts as a butler to the "mean and crazy" elderly lady who lives there. He decides to investigate with his new friend, Luna Lopez, and before long they are hearing a truly incredible tale from Viola Dots, whose 13-year-old son David disappeared into a magical frame 50 years ago. Tiger almost immediately figures out the frame's particular magic—involving an "Hour of Power" and whatever painting resides in the frame at that time—and he and Luna are sucked into a copy of Henri Rousseau's Surprised! where they meet David himself, still a teenager. They narrowly escape the painting's tiger and return to Viola's house, promising to return at another time to try to rescue her son and effectively setting up future installments. Cartoonish drawings—in full color when the duo is inside the painting, black-and-white when they are not—are plentiful, and an afterword introduces readers to the painting and the artist. VERDICT This mildly entertaining adventure is one to recommend to less than confident readers looking for a new series.—Laurie Slagenwhite Walters, Brighton District Library, Brighton, MI

CHAPTER ONE

“I saw a giant orange pig on our swing set this morning,” said my little sister, Maggie. “He was wearing a fancy black hat.”

We were eating tuna melts at the kitchen table in our new house.

“Of course he was,” I said. “And I bet he was playing ‘Jingle Bells’ on the tuba.”

“Everyone knows pigs don’t play the tuba,” Maggie snapped, sticking her tongue out at me.

I decided not to continue this conversation. Four-year-olds say weird things, and there’s no point trying to talk sense into them. The other day, it took me an hour to convince Maggie that bananas don’t dance. But our mom, being our mom, felt the little bubble brain deserved a serious answer.

“It would be very unusual to see an orange pig on our swing set, honey,” my mom said, wiping a long string of gooey cheese off Maggie’s chin.

“At least one with a fancy hat,” my dad added.

Maggie slammed her sandwich down on her plate. She can have a bad temper when she wants to.

“I saw him.” She pouted. “He also had on a white shirt buttoned all the way up his blobby pig neck and a red bow tie with polka dots.”

“This is ridiculous,” I told her. “There’s no way a pig could tie a tie. I don’t even know how to do it, and I’m a ten-year-old human. You’re just making up this whole story to get attention.”

“Tiger Brooks!” My mom frowned at me. “Don’t be so harsh with your sister, young man. She just has a very active imagination. Now clear the table, please.”

Wait a minute! Maggie talks like a crazy person and I get in trouble?

Who made that rule?

At least clearing the table got me out of doing the Saturday deliveries with my mom. She had twenty cakes to deliver that afternoon. Her business is called Cakes by Cookie, which sounds stupid until you realize that her name is Cookie. She bakes fancy cakes, mostly for little kids’ birthday parties. She’s been doing really well, which is how our family got the extra money to move into a bigger place from our small apartment in our old neighborhood. I had no interest in spending my first Saturday in our new house dropping off Elmo cakes.

Lucky for me, Maggie wanted to go with Mom. Dad announced that he was going to take a nap, so I did the dishes and cleaned up. Afterward, I checked my new Batman watch, the one my uncle Cole gave me when I told him I couldn’t tell time the old-fashioned way. It took me a while to learn, but now I could read the hands. It was only three o’clock. That left me the rest of the afternoon to set up my lab, with no four-year-olds telling me their imaginary pig stories.

My lab is what other people would call my bedroom. I like to call it a lab because it’s where science takes place. Science Tiger Brooks–style, that is. I take things apart to see how they work: clocks, radios, old tricycles, robots, windup dinosaurs—whatever I can find. Then I try to put them back together. Sometimes I do it right. But mostly, I make weird things like a toaster with wheels, or a dinosaur that ticks, or a kitchen chair that roars.

I had a lot of unpacking to do. The first box, which was labeled “HANDS OFF AND THAT MEANS YOU, MAGGIE” was filled with nuts, bolts, cogs, gears, and screws. The next carton had about a million remote controls I had collected that had gotten separated from their machines.

As I picked up that box, one of the remotes fell out and got jammed between my bed and the wall. Suddenly, I heard a whirring sound. Looking around, I saw that my radio-controlled helicopter had taken off. It circled my room and sailed out the window into the backyard.

I grabbed the remote and ran into the living room. My dad was on the couch, snoring like a grizzly bear. I dashed past him into the backyard, just in time to see my helicopter cruise by the swing set and disappear over the neighbor’s fence.

“Hey, get back here!” I called out. I tried using the controller, but the helicopter was out of range.

As I ran toward the fence, I noticed a weird pattern in the grass under the swing set. It looked like footprints, except they weren’t human footprints. Each print was divided into two sections and was pointed at the top. Could they be hoofprints? They didn’t look like horse hoofprints.

Wait a minute! Pigs have hooves.

Stop it, Tiger, I said to myself. You are not four years old. You do not see imaginary pigs. Just find your helicopter and go back into the lab.

I dragged one of the lawn chairs over to the fence. I hopped up and looked into the neighbor’s yard.

The grass in the yard was as tall as Maggie. No one had mowed it in years. There was a barbecue covered with rust and spiderwebs. A long clothesline with sheets hanging on it stretched across the whole yard. The sheets were splattered with paint—big splotches of red and purple and yellow and orange. Behind one of those sheets, I could just make out—no, even I didn’t believe it!

I stared hard and long. Then I had to believe it. My eyes don’t lie. It was a black top hat poking out from behind the sheets.

“I see you,” I said to the hat.

There was no answer.

“Whoever you are, if you have my helicopter, give it back.”

Something moved behind the sheets. I looked down and saw hooves attached to what looked like puffy orange legs!

Suddenly, a strong breeze came up and blew the sheet off the line. Standing in front of me was a large orange pig wearing a black top hat, a white shirt, and a red polka-dot bow tie. He was holding my helicopter.

“It’s you,” I whispered. “The one Maggie saw.”

A woman’s voice, old and shrill, came from inside the house.

“Chives,” the voice called. “Come in here right now. I need more blue!”

The pig gave me what I think was a smile and tipped his top hat.

“I’m very pleased to meet you, good sir,” he said.

I was so shocked, I couldn’t move. I just stared at him with my mouth hanging open.

“Chives!” the woman called again. “Right now!”

“If you’ll excuse me, Madame is calling,” he said.

Clutching my helicopter, the pig hurried through the back door of the house. I stood there, still as a statue.

Then I felt a cold, sticky hand on my shoulder. I spun around so fast, I fell off the lawn chair and landed facedown on the grass. I was afraid to look up, afraid of what I might see. The ice-cold hand of a ghost? A zombie with no face? If a talking orange pig lived next door, maybe something even weirder was lurking in my own backyard.

An exciting adventure for early chapter book readers
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: Tiger’s exploring his new neighborhood when he sees an orange pig in a hat and tie. Pursuing this unusual neighbor, he meets a girl named Luna, and the two of them trace Chives the Pig to an old haunted-looking house. Boldly making their way inside, they meet ancient Viola Dots, who hasn’t left her house in 50 years, ever since her son David disappeared into a picture frame, and Chives popped out in his place. Upon close examination of the frame, Tiger discovers a clock, which he sets back an hour. Almost immediately, the picture opens up, and he and Luna are sucked inside. There they meet David, who is still 13, and have to outrun a hungry tiger. They manage to find their way back, but David is left behind once again, leaving the reader ready for book #2, Splat! Another Messy Sunday, now available at a library or bookstore near you. Back matter includes information about the painting the kids go into, Surprised! By Henri Rousseau. 128 pages; grades 2-4.

Pros: A reasonably exciting adventure for early chapter book readers, with lots of illustrations, black and white for the times outside of the picture and color inside of it.

Cons: Viola Dots seems unusually spry for someone who must be closing in on 90 at the least.

Jane Austen's Names: Riddles, Persons, Places, by Margaret Doody

In Jane Austen’s works, a name is never just a name. In fact, the names Austen gives her characters and places are as rich in subtle meaning as her prose itself. Wiltshire, for example, the home county of Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey, is a clue that this heroine is not as stupid as she seems: according to legend, cunning Wiltshire residents caught hiding contraband in a pond capitalized on a reputation for ignorance by claiming they were digging up a “big cheese”—the moon’s reflection on the water’s surface. It worked.

In Jane Austen’s Names, Margaret Doody offers a fascinating and comprehensive study of all the names of people and places—real and imaginary—in Austen’s fiction. Austen’s creative choice of names reveals not only her virtuosic talent for riddles and puns. Her names also pick up deep stories from English history, especially the various civil wars, and the blood-tinged differences that played out in the reign of Henry VIII, a period to which she often returns. Considering the major novels alongside unfinished works and juvenilia, Doody shows how Austen’s names signal class tensions as well as regional, ethnic, and religious differences. We gain a new understanding of Austen’s technique of creative anachronism, which plays with and against her skillfully deployed realism—in her books, the conflicts of the past swirl into the tensions of the present, transporting readers beyond the Regency.

Full of insight and surprises for even the most devoted Janeite, Jane Austen’s Names will revolutionize how we read Austen’s fiction.

Review
“This is rich material, and Janites will love the code-cracking. . . . [A] playful and exuberant book.”  (Telegraph)

“Doody makes a convincing argument that Jane Austen (1775–1817) imbued most, if not all, of her character and place names with historical, geographical, or social significance, and provides the historical and cultural context necessary to understand the import of each of these careful naming choices. . . . A delightful, edifying read for both scholars and lay Austen fans.”
(Library Journal)

“Doody’s book is a marvellous thing. . . . The bravura set-piece literary criticisms are fresh, and valuable in themselves (Elinor Dashwood isn’t really as sensible as all that; obscured window panes are important in Persuasion), and so are the frequent, hitherto unmade links to the other novels by women that Jane Austen was reading.” (Times Literary Supplement)

“A magical mystery tour of virtually every location, and every family and individual, mentioned not only in the novels, but also in the Juvenilia and even the letters and diaries. . . . Doody writes with clarity and elegance, and arranges her material to lead the reader ever onwards into a whole world of language and meaning. . . . A comprehensive study, but never a dull one, this book is as entertaining as it is revealing, and will doubtless uncover fresh layers of meaning for even the best-read Austen fan.”
(Jane Austen’s Regency World)

“Jane Austen’s Names is a treasure chest.”
(First Things)

“No one, with the possible exception of Jane Austen herself, knows the fiction of Jane Austen and her time more intimately than Margaret Doody, and the depth and breadth of this knowledge is richly deployed here. . . . An erudite, provocative, and original book.”
(Review 19)

“To read Jane Austen’s Names is to appreciate Austen’s writings anew in the company of a peerlessly learned, delightfully opinionated scholar—an opportunity not to be missed.”
  (JASNA News)

“This meticulous, expansive, and enjoyable book recreates the delight of Austen’s wordplay in detailed etymologies, anecdotes, and historical and literary references. Doody’s vast research will undoubtedly afford readers of Austen new angles on the novels’ familiar characters and significant places. There is great payoff in this book’s copious details.” (Eighteenth-Century Fiction)

“A brilliant, provocative, and important book. Doody has marshaled a truly unprecedented array of material about names, places, and plotting culled from a dazzlingly expansive reading of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century novels—as well as books on local history and the English countryside. The result is an illuminating and enjoyable book that teaches us to think about Austen’s artistry in a fundamentally new way.” (Claudia L. Johnson, author of Jane Austen’s Cults and Cultures)

“Doody brings the insights of a lifetime of reading, teaching, and writing about Austen to this book. I admire how Jane Austen’s Names brings to view the riddling and punning play that Austen indulged in her naming practices. Doody reveals an author who positively relishes the comic resonances of the names she encountered in the social world around her.” (Deidre Shauna Lynch, author of Loving Literature: A Cultural History)

“This is a remarkable book—profuse, forensic, vividly imagined. To say that it enriches our experience of Austen’s fiction hardly does justice to the way Doody brings all its people and places to life through their names. In this erudite etymological adventure she excavates the deep text of Austen’s England, its embedded meanings and hidden histories.” (David Fairer, author of Organising Poetry: The Coleridge Circle, 1790–1798)

“Doody draws on a prodigious array of literary, geographical, historical, and linguistic information to figure out what the names of people and places in Jane Austen actually mean. With characteristic energy and curiosity, she links Austen’s riddling allusions to larger worlds, even to the movements of time itself.” (Jocelyn Harris, author of A Revolution Almost Beyond Expression: Jane Austen’s Persuasion)

The art itself is nature
By P. Salus
Prof. Doody, after a lifetime of reading novels, has produced an extraordinary exposition of the personal, family and place names of Jane Austen's oeuvre. Though I am older than Prof. Doody, and presumeably have been reading Jane and her predecessors about as long, there was much new and ever more bundled in this volume. Catherine Moreland's sometime freind Isabella Thorpe would not have found this truly horrid. Fanny Price would not have read it to Lady Bertram. But I read it with pleasure; and will (if my spouse relinquishes it) re-read parts of it. After all, there might be a relationship between Mansfield Park and Trollope's The Bertrams (1859).

Jane Austen Unveiled.
By Valerie Nordberg
I found this book to be very different from most of the others about Jane Austen as it gave a clearer picture of the times, fashions, likes and dislikes of the period. It gives each book she wrote a deeper meaning by annotating episodes, people, place-names, names etc. with added historical background. Above all, to me it explains Jane Austen's humour, in-jokes and her opinions which I haven't read in any other book. If you are a J A fan, I recommend this highly for the insights it gives on her as a person and author and on the age she lived in.

Much More Than Just Names
By Kathleen A. Flynn
Margaret Doody is a hard-core Jane Austen nerd, and this book is amazing. An erudite romp through English history, language and literature that apparently considers no aspect of Jane Austen's works too minor to explore. I thought I knew my Jane Austen, but this book has made rethink and re-examine many aspects of character and story. Fantastic!

Trim Tab reads a bit like a "James Bond" for hire crossed with a whodunnit ...
By James Stewart
Just finished this novel and really have been left wanting more. The story moves at pace and twists and turns through the narrative, weaving together real life people, events, places and organisations. Trim Tab reads a bit like a "James Bond" for hire crossed with a whodunnit where you are constantly trying to work out who who will ultimately be responsible for Radbyrne's death. The book does a good job of unearthing and exploring society's modern day flaws without being sanctimonious about it. As a bold, brave and original piece of literature Trim Tab deserves to be read by anyone that thinks they know how the world works!

Method no object to get the right result
By ArtBiker
A ripping yarn of a thriller, not for the faint hearted. Trim tab’s narrator, Ryan Radbyrne is a misogynistic amoral manipulator using every trick in the book to get the result for his clients. Method no object to get the right result, and it can be brutal. How much does this book reflect real life? Read it if you dare. It will make you think twice about a lot of news stories. Conspiracy theorists enjoy!

Conceptual Data Modeling and Database Design: A Fully Algorithmic Approach, Volume 1: The Shortest Advisable Path, by Christian Mancas

This new book aims to provide both beginners and experts with a completely algorithmic approach to data analysis and conceptual modeling, database design, implementation, and tuning, starting from vague and incomplete customer requests and ending with IBM DB/2, Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL Server, or Access based software applications. A rich panoply of solutions to actual useful data sub-universes (e.g. business, university, public and home library, geography, history, etc.) is provided, constituting a powerful library of examples.

Four data models are presented and used: the graphical Entity-Relationship, the mathematical EMDM, the physical Relational, and the logical deterministic deductive Datalog ones. For each one of them, best practice rules, algorithms, and the theory beneath are clearly separated. Four case studies, from a simple public library example, to a complex geographical study are fully presented, on all needed levels.

Several dozens of real-life exercises are proposed, out of which at least one per chapter is completely solved. Both major historical and up-to-date references are provided for each of the four data models considered.

The book provides a library of useful solutions to real-life problems and provides valuable knowledge on data analysis and modeling, database design, implementation, and fine tuning.

Review

"What Christian Mancas wanted to do is to write the best possible book on real, pragmatic database design available, bar none. He suceeded. . . This book will find its way into the literature on database design and development. It has a good number of ideas that must be considered in any design task. It uses a sample-based approach and is thus easy to understand. It supports digestion due to nice exercises. And, finally it discusses in details also the result of a design in different DBMS languages. So, a reader can be sure that the book guides to the right track."

―Bernhard Thalheim, Department of Computer Science, Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel, Germany (from the Foreword)

"Covers the classical data management topics that any computer professional should master. . . . This volume is a gentle yet rigorous and extensive introduction to the main topics in data management, with concrete examples on several popular database systems. There are lots of detailed examples, and each concept is covered in detail, and from several perspectives, using alternative definitions or notations where needed. The book ensures that no reader is left behind, and all potential questions are answered. . . . Best suited for the practitioner who wants to achieve a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts in data management. . . . This volume is an important first step in understanding the complexities of data today."

―Dan Suciu, Professor, University of Washington, Seattle, USA (from the Foreword)

"One of the biggest problems in nowadays applications is the management of data. Analyzing and structuring large amounts of data relies on understanding and being able to describe its properties and constraints. Professor Christian Mancas's exceptionally well-documented work, A Conceptual Data Modeling and Database Design, gives the basic insights of the database models and their importance as a foundation for the complex applications. This book guides the reader throughout real-life scenarios, providing essential software engineering advice. Indeed, by addressing some of the problems people usually encounter when designing a database, Professor Mancas pedagogically connects the end user's requirements to the notions of entities and relations between them. Meanwhile, the mathematical analysis and proofs sustain the theoretical background of the statements and provide a complete view of the possible algorithmic optimizations. The first volume, A Fully Algorithmic Approach: The Shortest Advisable Path, represents an important contribution in the learning process as it advocates best practice rules in database designs with clear explanations and practical exercises.

"This first volume mainly presents Professor Mancas's point of view of the database design state of the art (enriched with his main original contributions to the E-RDM and RDM). I am looking forward for the second volume of this book that will mainly present his most important contribution to the conceptual data modeling and database design: his (Elementary) Mathematical Data Model [(E)MDM], as well as MatBase, his KDBMS prototype based on both (E)MDM, E-RDM, RDM, and Datalog."
―Andra Hugo, PhD, University of Bordeaux, France

"Modern scientific and business challenges, the proliferation of personal computers and intelligent gadgets, the Internet and industries' large amounts of data, all fuel a huge need of database management systems. The book by C. Mancas is an excellent introduction to pragmatic database design and development. Presented in a gentle manner, with many examples, the book is suited to a large category of readers, from computer science and engineering students to the practitioners of the domain."
―Cristian S. Calude, Chair Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of Auckland, New Zealand

From Booklist
In Smith’s latest presidential-themed offering, the Lincoln Room at the White House is haunted. The proof? Over the years, none of the presidential pets would step paw inside. Enter an inquisitive girl named Quincy (homage to Adams?) who is taking a school tour of the White House and spots the ghost of Lincoln standing over the Gettysburg Address. Quincy and Lincoln tell silly jokes and share what they most often dream about—for Lincoln, he is on a ship sailing toward an unknown shore. Eventually, Quincy leads Lincoln out of the White House and gives him an update on progress since 1865; the former prez is happy to know the states are united. While there are plenty of juicy historical tidbits for teachers and librarians to mine here, kids may need help to follow the random musings and sort fact from fiction. The excellent, textured artwork mixes period and modern details well, and the beige palette, with hints of red and blue, is lovely. A perhaps too-brief afterword references the dream, which haunted Lincoln the morning of his assassination, and notes the “presidential pooches.” HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Highly acclaimed Smith is just coming off his Caldecott Honor win for Grandpa Green (2011). Teachers, librarians, and anyone who knows anything about kids’ books will be anticipating this one. Grades K-3. --Ann Kelley

Heartwarming and educational.
By Anne-Marie G
What a great book to have come out in the midst of all the Lincoln fervor from the films and books that are out now for adults. I was worried that this book would be too cluttered with text, but it actually has a very charming story in it.

It starts by alluding to the Lincoln Bedroom ghost story. Then a little girl goes on a tour of the White House (lucky kid!) and sees ghostly Abe looking sad. She finds out he hasn't left the White House in a very long time. So they go on a tour of the United States. She shows him how things have changed, mostly for the better, and are still changing-- to keep getting better.

It ends with Lincoln feeling much better about the state of the country. It is surprisingly heartwarming, the illustrations, while muted in color are effective and expressive.

I really enjoyed this book. It would be great to read to early elementary schoolers. Say from 1st to 3rd grade.

I had hoped for a history lesson hidden inside a fun tale ala John
By Kindle Customer
We have been huge fans of Lane's other books, but this one fell very short for us. I had hoped for a history lesson hidden inside a fun tale ala John, Paul, George, and Ben. What I got was VERY light on facts, and very heavy on pretension. Sadly, this book didn't keep the attention of any of my 7 kids (ages 8 months to 12 years) who will ALL sit and enjoy Smith's other books. Save your money and skip this one.

Redeeming Words and the Promise of Happiness: A Critical Theory Approach to Wallace Stevens and Vladimir Nabokov, by David Kleinberg-Levin

This book boldly ventures to cross some traditional academic boundaries, offering an original, philosophically informed argument regarding the nature of language by reading and interpreting the poetry of Wallace Stevens and the novels of Vladimir Nabokov. So it is a work both in literary criticism and in philosophy. The approach is strongly influenced by Walter Benjamin’s philosophy of language and Theodor Adorno’s aesthetic theory, but the philosophical thought of other philosophers—notably Plato, Kant, Hegel, Emerson, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein—figures significantly in the reading and interpretation. The essence of the argument is that, despite its damaged condition (standardization, commodification, staleness), language is, as such, by virtue of its very existence, the bearer of a utopian or messianic promise of happiness. Moreover, it is argued that, by reconciling the two senses of sense (sensuous sense and intelligible sense), showing the sheer power of words to create fictional worlds and destroy what they have just created, and redeeming the revelatory power of words—above all, the power to turn the familiar into something no longer familiar, something astonishing or perplexing—the two writers in this study sustain our hope for a world of reconciled antagonisms and contradictions, evoking in the way they freely play with the sounds and meanings of words, some intimations of a world—our world here, this very world, not some heavenly world—in which the promise of happiness would be fulfilled and redeemed. In the first part of the book, reflecting on the poetry of Stevens, Kleinberg-Levin argues that the poet defies the correspondence theory of truth to enable words to be faithful to truth as transformative and revelatory—what Heidegger calls “unconcealment”, translating the Greek. He also argues that in the pleasure we get from the sensuous play of words, there is an anticipation of the promise of happiness that challenges the theological doctrine of an otherworldly happiness and makes the religious experience seem like a paltry substitute. In the second part of the book, Kleinberg-Levin shows how Nabokov inherits Mallarmé’s conception of literature, causing with his word-plays the sudden reduction of the fictional world he has just so compellingly created to its necessary conditions of materiality: white paper, ink, print on the page. We thus see the novel as a work of fiction, as mere semblance; we see its conditions of possibility, created and destroyed before our very eyes. But the pleasure in seeing words doing this, and the pleasure in their sensuous materiality, are intimations of the promise of happiness that language bears. Using a Kantian definition of modernism, according to which a work is modernist if it reveals and questions the inherited assumptions about its necessary conditions of possibility, these studies show how and why both Stevens and Nabokov are exemplars of literary modernism.

Review
Few if any philosophers have had the courage to engage the formal and conceptual difficulties of literary modernism, particularly its regulating idea that, as the poet Stèphane Mallarmé argued, language is made of words but not of the things we use words to produce: concepts, propositions, descriptions, and even expressions of feeling. Not that the literary work lacks such things, but the materiality of its language is irreducible to any of these discursive functions. On the contrary, as David Kleinberg-Levin makes clear in this remarkable book, the sensuous material of language is itself the medium of aesthetic experience as well as an experience of world-making that transforms our relation to how things are. He develops his arguments by way of careful critical readings of Wallace Stevens’s poetry and poetics and by close attention to the self-reflexive features of Vladimir Nabokov’s novels, in which developments of plot and character are always mediated by innovative wordplay and ironic comments on the forms and conventions of fiction-writing that Nabokov himself is employing. Kleinberg-Levin’s principal argument is that, contrary to a good deal of received opinion, the prominence of “sensuous materiality” in poetry and fiction is not a symptom of a decadent aestheticism but the fulfillment of a truly philosophical aesthetics: namely, the transfiguration of our everyday world into genuinely desirable forms of life. (Gerald L. Bruns, University of Notre Dame)

In this midst of our current troubled world, Kleinberg-Levin opens a hopeful path for us in explaining how language offers us the happiness of the transfiguration of the world that redeems, even when we have lost faith in other sources of redemption. It is even more hopeful in showing us how Wallace Stevens could find truth and transfiguration in the realm of the sensible and imaginal — a redemption faithful to the earth, as Nietzsche put it, and a more modest happiness than attempts at resolving our pain or transcending it. Nabokov, in Kleinberg-Levin’s account, playfully explores the possibilities of language to draw upon its own sensuous divinity in the materiality and density of its workings, again providing us with a resource for originating meaning, reconciling the intellectual and sensuous, and intensifying beauty. The poetry and prose examined is rich and engaging. You will feel uplifted by this book. (Glen A. Mazis, Professor of Humanities and Philosophy, Penn State Harrisburg)

A Trinitarian Theology of Religions: An Evangelical Proposal, by Gerald R. McDermott, Harold A. Netland

Named by the International Bulletin of Missionary Studies as an Outstanding Book of 2014 for Mission Studies

Over the last four decades, evangelical scholars have shown growing interest in Christian debates over other religions, seeking answers to essential questions: How are we to think about and relate to other religions, be open to the Spirit, and at the same time remain evangelical and orthodox? Gerald R. McDermott and Harold A. Netland offer critiques of a variety of theologians and religious studies scholars, including evangelicals, but also challenge evangelicals to move beyond parochial positions. This volume is both a manifesto and a research program, critically evaluating the last forty years of Christian treatments of religious others and proposing a comprehensive direction for the future. It addresses issues relating to the religions in both systematic theology and missiology, taking up long-debated questions such as contextualization, salvation, revelation, the relationship between culture and religion, conversion, social action, and ecumenism. It concludes with responses from four leading thinkers of African, Asian, and European backgrounds: Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, Vinoth Ramachandra, Lamin Sanneh, and Christine Schirrmacher.

Review

"This book offers a remarkably lucid, systematic synthesis of the vexing question of the 'theology of religions,' drawing on the biblical witness, the Christian tradition, and a wide range of contemporary scholarship. The authors should be commended for achieving their ambitious goal of presenting an 'evangelical Christian framework for thinking about religions and religious others'...Given its exceptional clarity and organization, I would recommend Trinitarian Theology of Religions for upper-level undergraduate or seminary classes on the theology of religions or evangelical systematic theology. As evidenced by the four responses at the end, I also trust that this book will serve as an important contribution to the burgeoning literature concerning the theology of religions."--International Bulletin of Missionary Research

"A Trinitarian Theology of Religions is great resource not only for missiologists and theologians but also pastors and Christian leaders who are wrestling with the challenges of following Christ in a pluralistic world." --JETS

"Gerald McDermott and Harold Netland, who separately have contributed so much to the evangelical theology of religions, now together offer us the definitive place to engage it. This rich volume, with its sprightly and searching response essays, is both a state-of-the-art review and a positive advance in one of the most important conversations Christian theologians are having today." --John G. Stackhouse, Jr., Sangwoo Youtong Chee Professor of Theology and Culture, Regent College

"This 'evangelical proposal' is lucid, timely, and astute. It draws on a rich contemporary evangelical theological engagement with world religions. The authors also engage with the wider Christian debate, thus the proposal transcends denominational boundaries. The critical discussion of the book by four scholars at the end, along with Netland and McDermott's response, adds to the book's value as a stimulating theological resource. This is an important contribution to the literature." --Gavin D'Costa, author of Vatican II: Doctrines on Jews and Muslims

"...[T]his volume is a constructive, timely contribution to the field." --Religious Studies Review
