About the Author

Herbert Okolowitz studied philosophy, comparative literature and history of arts at the universities of Augsburg and Bologna and finished his PhD in philosophy in 2006. He worked as poker coach and later as Head of Education at Pokerstrategy.com. He started playing Poker in 2007 and is a professional poker player and PLO expert since 2011. He was the author of many strategy articles, especially 'PLO for Beginners', translated into 16 languages at Pokerstrategy.com.

Wladimir Taschner, aka insyderrr on FTP, insyder19 on Pokerstars, studied Economics, plays high stakes poker professionally since 2008, switched from NL to PLO in 2010. Very well presented

This is an excellent book for intermediate to advanced players with hand examples all for $5/$10. It is the first I have seen that emphasizes a game theory optimal approach for PLO. I found the chapters discussing bet sizing and board texture-dependent decision-making to be most helpful. The short chapter on mindset, BRM, etc, is also well done. One of the authors is a philosophy PhD, so the organization of the book and the explanations are very clear.
If you are just starting out, I would recommend reading the Jeff Hwang books before this one. One thing to keep in mind is that this book is geared toward online 6-max and does not discuss live full ring play. There are short sections on cap games and deep stack situations, but it is primarily for a 100 BB max buy-in. Noticeably absent is material on 2-5 player games. Many of the concepts contained are probably most useful at tight tables where flops are seen heads up.

Unless you are a MIT or Stanford graduate, this book is so complex that you will never finish it. One super redeeming quality was that it's complexity taught me what a math oriented game PLO is to play.

It's a good complement, but what I think Prendergast's text does ...

I'm writing this review from the perspective of someone teaching first-year comp (that's probably "College Writing" or something to you, students), so students looking at this book should also read other reviews by students. I'm also not currently prepping a course with this text, so I can't speak to actual classroom reception of the book.

What I can say is I've been reading this for a little while now as I prepped for fall (and a little after finishing the first half of a two-course FYC cycle) because I wanted to compare what I might do with this book to the prep with the text I've been using most frequently: Graff & Birkenstein's TSIS. It's a good complement, but what I think Prendergast's text does so well is put all the content that I've said in classes, informally, and present it as a more concrete, formal text for the part of class that few textbooks really cover well: offering short, useful answers (the text is basically a FAQ for College Writing) to the pervasive worries that students bring with them from English, as they spent high school defining it. I mean, the first week in, I'm saying everything in the book, and the book does a fantastic job using a conversational tone and non-technical language to explain the expectations of "college" writing that are new to the student. So there's a real continuity here between the messages I send in classroom conversation and the content of the book. It's actually kind of uncanny. But many of Prendergast's answers are not always points that students note, physically, and retain; when I discuss the "Since the dawn of man..." introduction, it's still often framed by the student as conversation. So I'll still get those introductions; I'll still have trouble making my explanation of a thesis statement good for student practice.

So you'll find engaging explanations of common first-year challenges written from the perspective of the student's concerns, not the assessable content: what makes a good research question, how do you think about your thesis, how do you think about sources, why "I" is a contextual question (thankfully the book doesn't present it that way, but's it's still clear), what a "strong" thesis statement is, what to do with an introduction, etc. It's all course content, but as explanation - a good example of what this book does comes early with a question on teachers students don't like, a conversation I have often. It's as much about habituating the student to expectations as it is about technical processes. And I'm thankful for that, because the explanations are so engaging.

It'd a great companion text, at any rate, one that would set up and follow much of my lecture content - and this is important to me - by maintaining a continuity of voice, as I mention above. I agree with (in the sense that I've literally said it all in class) much of the book's content about student writing, and if I'm confident that my class is enjoyable (insofar as, y'know, it can be) to take, then I'd suggest this book is enjoyable to read. I loved reading it, at least. I'll see if that's an unwarranted assumption; I've made that mistake in the past, but this book isn't being sold at Pearson prices, so. How can you really go wrong here.

Using this book in first-year college writing course

This book is a gem. I ordered it on the recommendation of a colleague and read it cover to cover. I've taught composition courses in the past, and I now coordinate first-year writing courses for a college program in a prison. I'm excited to use this book in the upcoming spring semester!

It's clear that Prendergast planned this book with the needs of students who are new to college writing in mind. It is cleverly organized with chapter names that reflect student FAQs--I have seriously been asked every question posed in the chapter titles multiple times in my teaching career! All the advice and instruction in this book is relatable and delivered frankly. A lot of what Prendergast writes about in this book is overlooked by instructors in their well-intentioned attempt to focus on the hard skills required for successful college writing. Two significantly under-considered challenges for new students in a writing course (or any course) are 1) understanding and breaking down an assignment and 2) deciding to drop a class because they are at odds with their instructor. Prendergast provides insight for both students and instructors struggling in these areas. She addresses and debunks common but scary assumptions students make about writing, like the idea a paper has to "flow" and the idea that reaching a page limit qualifies as a complete essay. This book will be an incredibly useful resource for my students and a handy training tool for incoming instructors. I'd recommend this to any student new to college writing and every instructor who wants to help their students succeed!

Catherine Prendergast has been teaching writing, and writing about teaching writing, for a while now. But she’s only grown in her irreverence as time has passed.

Thank God.

Can I Use I?: Because I Hate Hate Hate College Writing is a short book (130 pages, print), but it has a big goal: to demystify the freshman college writing course for incoming students.

It accomplishes this goal using a three-part technique. First, it breaks down college writing challenges into what I’m guessing are the most common student questions that Prendergast has received over the years. Each one of these questions gets a chapter. Second, the book pulls back the curtain on what writing professors are thinking, providing insights into the minds of the real people who are assigning college writing. Third, the book draws analogies with non-writing activities or events to help new writers understand what exactly is going on in the writing class and what they should be doing.

This is a magical combination. Answering the most common questions derived over decades of experience, providing professor insights, and connecting college writing to students’ experience outside of the classroom makes for effective and entertaining reading. Let me give you an example.

great novel, bad edition

Yes, this is a great novel, though I personally think the last three pages were a big mistake. But this review is about the "new, corrected edition" by Mr. Polk, which, I'm afraid, is a literary and scholarly travesty. Readers will be well advised to stick with the original 1946 text.; the fact that it has been a force in American life for over 50 years, and that in the 43 years before his death Warren never gave any indication he was dissatisfied with it, should be reason enough. (A cynic would argue that the only reason for the new edition was to extend the copyright.)
Polk went back to Warren's original typescript draft to restore many of the passages, phrases, and stylistic features that were changed or deleted in the editorial process before publication (and approved by Warren); and he claims that his editorial decisions have created a superior novel. The first problem is that, except for a very sketchy 10-page essay, Polk gives the reader no help in judging for himself. A respectable scholarly edition would at the least indicate, at the bottom of each page or the back of the book, each instance in which the first edition text has been changed and where the change came from (the draft was edited by several hands, including Warren's). A reader who wants to assess Polk's work will have to have both editions in hand and scan page by page, and even then will not know whose decisions Polk has overruled. Thus Polk puts himself beyond criticism.
Polk's essay tries to justify his decisions, but his illustrations are merely anecdotal and offer no consistent editorial principles or methodology. I haven't the space here to go through a critique point by point; suffice it to say, I'm not convinced by any of his examples, including the reversion from Willie Stark to Willie Talos. Polk seems to be one of those editors who believes that the closer you get to the author's very first words on paper, the better or the more authentic your version will be, since then you are closest to the "white heat of creativity." But this is one of the silliest forms of romanticism still in existence. And I suspect it runs directly again Warren's own philosophy of history. Polk may think he has restored history, but in fact he has falsified it, for the history was the event of publication.
Polk writes: "Many may feel that Warren's at least tacit approval of the [original] editors' changes-indeed, his gratitude for them-should argue against a new edition. But his `approval' may have come from fatigue, from pressures of one sort or another, from the years of constant work on it. Indeed, his very closeness to the novel may have prevented him from exercising his own good judgment, and in any case this version indicates that he had written better than he knew." Ah, but surely Mr. Polk knows? No, these are the lamest of speculations, for which there is no evidence, and the surest signs that Polk's fantasies are in danger of effacing Warren's work.

The best book I ever read. Don't miss it!

Born in Kentucky, Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) had a long and prestigious literary career, his huge body of work including poetry, essays, textbooks, history and novels. "All the King's Men", written in 1946, won a Pulitzer Prize and I can well understand why. First of all there are the words, lots of them, words that flow and caress and make liberal use of just the right tiny details to get to the essence the people he dscribes. Never have I seen such artful characterization and I found I was re-reading some of these descriptions just for the pure beauty of the way he used his words. And yet those words never got in the way of the story; they enhanced it. It is also a piece of history as the author brings alive the South of 1920s and 1930s.
The story is about Willie Stark, man of humble origin who rose to power as a governor of an unnamed Southern state and is supposedly loosely based on the life of Huey Long, the Governor of Louisiana. But the main character is really Jack Burden, the narrator of the story. He's a reporter when he meets Willie Stark early in his career and is there as witness his political rise. Later, he works directly for Willie and becomes a key player in the blackmailing and political intrigue that surrounds the Governor. We come to know Jack through the people in his life as well as his own internal introspections and watch the swirl of events that grow in depth and complexity. Nothing is quite what it seems at first, and there are multiple sub-stories that unfold as the basic action of the book moves along. And then, just when I think I understand it all, there is yet another and another layer of depth and meaning. Everything has an effect on everything else. I found the book impossible to put down, thinking about it all the time, not only as it related to the story itself, but also how it applies to my own life.
This is perhaps the best book I ever read and I can't heap enough praise on it. It is clearly a masterpiece and I give it my very highest recommendation. It's a present to yourself to read it. Don't miss it!

An Absolutely Wonderful Book!

It is extremely hard to sit down and write a review for any piece of classic literature for there is very little a reviewer can say that is new. Of course, for a book to be considered a classic most of its reviewers have to have had a favorable opinion of the work and all a new reviewer can do is concur or disagree. In this case, I couldn't possibly agree more with previous reviewers who have written rave reviews of this book.

This is not so much the story of Willie Stark, who was Willie Talos in the original manuscript, as it the story of Jack Burden, the man telling the story. It really seems to be the story of a young man and his road to maturity. That young man is Jack Burden and Stark seems to be just a convenient focal point around which Warren weaves his story. The plot is very well laid out and flows very well from beginning to end, which is quite an accomplishment when one considers all of the subplots to be found in this book. As Burden tells his story he often wanders down memory lane, recalling events which his story has recalled. Each subplot builds to it's own climax while also building toward the climax of the main story and the reader is swept along like a barrel on the Niagara River. Just as the reader feels as if he can put the book aside for a while, another subplot begins to ascend through the story and the reader is again swept along unable to pause. I got so caught up in one of the subplots that I was late for a very important appointment. I just couldn't stop until I found out what happened.

Stark is obviously supposed to resemble Louisiana Governor Huey Long and he very much does so. If one also reads T. Harry Williams biography of Long they will see just how strong the resemblance is. There are several morals and messages to be drawn from this story including thoughts on good and evil and past and future. In addition to the messages though, one has to admire the incredible amount of research Warren had to have done to write this book. Warren of course was alive and well during Huey Long's reign and that had to help him but in all events described his historical accuracy is uncanny. For example, one of the subplots involves Jefferson Davis in a minor way and even in delving in things well beyond his own memories Warren laces the story with many accurate details. In one passage, Warren relates that Davis missed the steamboat that was to carry him on the first leg of his trip to Montgomery to assume the Presidency of the new Confederacy. Warren points out that the boat left Davis Landing and then was halted out in the river while a smaller boat brought the new President out to get on board. A historical fact that would not be common knowledge but that is entirely accurate.

Many people avoid books that are considered to be top-flight works of literature. These people often assume that such books must be dull and so philosophical that they are beyond the average reader. In some instances this may be the case but not with this book. Warren has turned out a masterpiece that is not only fun to read but is so enjoyable that the reader will hate to come to the end. There are messages to be found here, both obvious and subtle but do not worry about the messages. They will come through on their own as you sit back and enjoy the ride over the falls.

a definitive guide for any business seeking to learn more about email implementation and design

As the managing director of a non-profit that relies heavily on internet use and email, we recently switched our email to Zoho from Outlook. The writing itself is erudite and the author is an obvious authority on the subject, making it even easier to absorb the information without getting overwhelmed or fatigued. Also, the information on staying on the “whitelist” and not getting blacklisted was worth the purchase alone.

Good Overview of Email, but no technical details of the setup.

This book is not super technical. It will not dive into the exact configuration of any email server system, nor will it provide details in regards to the setup of an email server. It will however, give you a good idea of how email works, different types of mechanism involved and what to consider when setting up an email system. It is more of an overview of "Email Architecture". Overall very informative.

An essential work for engineers and professional communicators

Nathans-Kelly and Nicometo offer in this slim volume a wealth of information for both technical professionals, who communicate much of their work through presentations, and professional communicators who design and build presentation graphics.

Informed by best practices and research on cognition and memory, as well as on graphic design principles, the authors present five "rules" for presentation slides:
1) Revisit presentation assumptions.
2) Write sentence headers.
3) Use targeted visuals.
4) Archive details for future use.
5) Keep looking forward.

Each of these rules is the subject of one to four chapters that expand on the rule and offer numerous examples and illustrations in both verbal and graphic form. Indeed, the scores of figures in the book are themselves an effective summary of the book's content. A reader can page through the volume and examine the figures and their captions, and gain an enormous amount of information by that simple act.

The rule that captured my attention and made me think about aspects of presentations that hadn't occurred to me before was #4, "Archive details for future use." Chapters 10 and 11 ("Make Slide Decks with Archival and Legacy Value" and "Include More than One Language") urge readers to think beyond the immediate purpose and audience of a presentation and about a slide deck's life after its initial use in a workplace meeting or professional conference.

For scientists, engineers, and technical professionals wanting to rise above the status quo of presentations in their field, Slide Rules is a valuable resource. The book is clear and direct in its advice. Moreover, the book supports that advice with logical arguments, a wealth of professional examples, and thoughtful reference listings.

As someone who has taught technical presentations in academia, government, and industry on four continents, I was particularly impressed by the frequently asked questions posed and then answered throughout the book. Yes, those are the questions that engineers, scientists, and technical professionals frequently ask, and the answers in Slide Rules are spot on.

Perhaps what most distinguishes book is that it covers in depth many important topics that other texts (including my own) skim or ignore. For instance, Slide Rules dives deeply into the question of how to archive presentations with a slide style based on visual evidence. The books also discusses the all too frequent situation of how to overcome a lousy corporate template. Third, the book does a great job of analyzing the process about how professionals in an organization come to put aside the status quo of PowerPoint’s defaults in favor of an assertion-evidence approach that follows psychology principles for how people learn.

I bought this book to learn more about pragmatics and its applications in data. I found this book well written. It flows through the topic in a step by step manner with sufficient depth and great examples. The book made the topic of pragmatics understandable and not superficial.

This is a book that anyone who works with data and information should read and understand to become Data Literate. It will remain one of my primary references.

I am in no way a linguist or someone versed in language but this book exposed a whole new world to me that helps me better understand two key factors in human and data communications; meaning and context.
