A Michael L. Printz Honor Book

Troy Billings is seventeen, 296 pounds, friendless, utterly miserable, and about to step off a New York subway platform in front of an oncoming train. Until he meets Curt MacCrae, an emaciated, semi-homeless, high school dropout guitar genius, the stuff of which Lower East Side punk rock legends are made. Never mind that Troy’s dad thinks Curt’s a drug addict and Troy’s brother thinks Troy’s the biggest (literally) loser in Manhattan. Soon, Curt’s recruited Troy as his new drummer—even though Troy can’t play the drums. Together, Curt and Troy will change the world of punk, and Troy’s own life, forever.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up-The opening lines of this first-person narrative immediately hook readers as they enter the lonely, troubled, self-deprecating world of Troy Billings, a 296-pound 17-year-old who contemplates ending his life by jumping off a New York City subway platform. He is interrupted by Curt MacCrae, a legendary punk-rock guitarist and sometime-student at W. T. Watson High School. When Curt connects with him and "saves his life," Troy is amazed that someone, especially someone as cool as Curt, wants to befriend him. An unlikely, almost symbiotic relationship develops between these two. Curt convinces Troy to be the drummer in his band, even though he hasn't touched the drums since seventh grade. He is flattered by the suggestion and believes that being in the band could be his key to acceptance. Troy's voice is candid, irreverent, realistic, and humorous. He imagines the events of his life in facetious headlines always related to his weight. Curt himself is the product of a dysfunctional family, and he has plenty of problems of his own, including a reliance on drugs. Going has created three-dimensional characters whose behavior rings true. There are many unexpected twists and turns, including the horrifying and hysterically gross depiction of Troy's first gig. Fans of Joyce Carol Oates's Big Mouth & Ugly Girl (HarperCollins, 2002) will love this wonderful, engrossing tale.

From Booklist
Gr. 8-12. His name is Troy, but to the world--and in his internal dialogues--he is the Fat Kid. Really Fat. Almost 300 pounds of sweating, unhappy insecurity. Then out of a moment of despair comes magic. As Troy considers whether to splatter himself on a subway track, Curt MacCrae, a charismatic punk rocker/homeless kid/dropout, comes along and stops him. For the price of a meal, Curt befriends Troy, and he sees something under all those layers: a potential musician, a friend, and someone with the ability to see through life's bull. First-time novelist Going has put together an amazing assortment of characters. Troy is the ultimate fat kid, the kind whose every move, every thought is predicated on what it is like to wear a coat of blubber. Curt, as thin as Troy is fat, is a combination of Kurt Cobain, Ratso Rizzo, and a fairy godfather. He sprinkles Troy with the dirt and grime of punk rock and brings out the prince hiding inside the weight (to the book's credit, Troy doesn't get any thinner). Equally well drawn are the lesser characters, including Troy's father, a former Marine with an innate sense of what kids need. The narrative could have been tighter in places, but this is an impressive debut that offers hope for all kids--dross transmuted into gold. Ilene Cooper

Going ... Going ... Gone!!
By J.D. Wise
"I'm ready to give him full credit and be on my way, mosey along to contemplate some new nonfunny form of suicide (FAT KID GETS HIT BY A BUS?), but the blond ferret stands up and extends a grimy hand.
"Curt MacCrae," he says. That's when I just about piss my pants.
Curt MacCrae is a legend at W.T. Watson High School. He's the only truly homeless, sometimes student, sometimes dropout, punk rock, artist god among us."
K.L. Going's Fat Kid Rules the World is an engaging, page-turning read from a new author on the Young Adult scene. Troy Billings (a.k.a. the Fat Kid) is 6' 1", weighs 300 pounds, and spends most of his waking hours trying to determine how to end what he sees as his useless life. The novel begins with Troy contemplating sucide in a Manhattan subway station, only to be interrupted by Curt MacCrae and presented with Curt's vision for Troy's future: "Big T" will become the drummer in Curt's punk rock band, Rage/Tectonic. The catch? Troy can't play the drums to save his life, but, to Curt, that's no big deal.
Over the course of 183 pages (Hardcover Edition), Going takes a deep look at the impact of life, death, obesity, family dysfunction, drug abuse, and the love of music on two high school seniors. The narrative moves along quickly, with some chapters as short as two or three paragraphs. Going's characters are multi-dimensional -- both flawed and passionate -- lending a strong, realistic tone to the story. The interactions between Troy; Curt; Troy's younger brother, Dayle; Troy's father (an ex-Marine now working as a security consultant); and Curt's mother and stepfather are eerily true to life for many young adults who have lost parents or come from broken homes.
Fat Kid is definitely a Young Adult novel, suited for readers aged 15 and above. Parents who monitor their children's reading tastes should be aware that Going's language reflects High School in the 21st Century, with somewhat liberal usage of cursing, not-so-vague descriptions of sexual situations, a quick (and needless) swipe at "born-again Christians," and a very true to life picturization of the punk rock scene. Fat Kid also deals with drug abuse (including prescription and OTC medicines), loss of a parent, and homelessness. Language and sexuality aside, Going has crafted a marvelous debut novel that should spark intense discussions among teens, their peers, and (hopefully) parents about self-image, self-acceptance, health and well-being, and family dynamics.
Highly recommended.

Richie's Picks: FAT KID RULES THE WORLD
By N. S.
"I'm a sweating fat kid standing on the edge of the subway platform staring at the tracks. I'm seventeen years old, weigh 296 pounds, and I'm six foot one. I have a crew cut, yes a crew cut, sallow skin, and the kind of mouth that puckers when I breathe. I'm wearing a shirt that reads MIAMI BEACH--SPRING BREAK 1997, and huge, bland tan pants--the only kind of pants I own. Eight pairs, all tan."
As this head-bashing-yet-really-sweet-tale hits its first screeching chord progression, seventeen year-old Troy Billings contemplates jumping in front of an approaching subway train. A once average-sized child, he has eaten his way through years of depression after the death of his mother. Raised by his father, who is a retired military officer, and having experienced unrelenting contempt from a younger brother, who is a popular jock, Troy is certain that everyone is constantly eyeing him and laughing.
"First, the train is coming, its single headlight illuminating the dark tracks. I hear its deep rumble and take the fateful step forward. I want to picture myself flying dramatically through the air but realize I wouldn't have the muscle power to launch my body. Instead, I would plummet straight down. Maybe I wouldn't even get my other leg off the platform--my weight would pull me down like an anchor. That's how I see it."
But Troy does not jump. Or plummet. His plans are rudely interrupted by the "disembodied voice" of a skinny teenager--Curt MacCrae--who is sitting in the dark behind him.
"He looks like a blond ferret. Stringy unwashed hair and huge eyes, jeans that are barely recognizable, stained white T-shirt, huge red overshirt, ratty old sweater...The sneakers, one Converse and one Nike, are both untied and the layers are all partially buttoned even though it's got to be one hundred degrees in the subway. The guy is so filthy I can hardly look at him. I mean, he's caked--looks like an old war victim from some black and white film."
Curt, this majorly poor example of good hygiene, is a homeless, locally legendary punk guitarist who disappeared from the high school Troy attends. He is also a walking pharmacy. (He believes in self-inflicted health care.) Curt demands lunch from Troy for saving his life, and then informs the enormous young man that he, Troy, is to be the drummer in Curt's new band--a duo named Rage/Tectonic. That Troy has not played the drums since junior high is irrelevant--at least to Curt.
As Troy tries to conceive of a different self-image for himself and tries to overcome his paralyzing fears of what he believes everyone else is thinking of him, Curt's dicey health and his dicey relationship with Troy's dad and brother Dayle kept me alternately holding my breath and laughing so hard that I could barely catch it. Though much of Curt's on-the-fringe lifestyle remains an enigma to both Troy and to us, we do get vivid glimpses of the grunge and the glamor associated with being a teenage punk musician.
" 'You are punk rock, T. You just don't know it yet, and I don't know how to convince you.' "
FAT KID RULES THE WORLD is totally phat! While the joyfulness and quirkiness of the story and the body image issue may allow for grouping this book with some others you've read before, K. L. Going is truly a new voice on the YA scene.

Troy knows that everyone is watching him. And laughing at him. Of course they are. At seventeen years old and almost 300 pounds, wearing what appears to be the same pair of tan pants daily, every move he makes is laughable. Will he be able to get out of the car? How many burgers will he eat? Even his effort to breathe is laughable as he huffs and puffs his way along.

He worries that he smells. You don't understand. It's not that he's a pig or anything, he just has a hard time fitting in the shower.

Poised over the subway tracks, Troy contemplates whether he can find a form of suicide that will be so serious, so severe, that no one will laugh. Enter Curt. Semi-homeless teen, school dropout, legend at his high school, and uber amazing guitar player, Curt attaches himself to Troy after saving him from the tracks. He's an itch that can't be scratched, a tick burrowing under the skin. Before Troy realizes it, he's agreed to buy Curt dinner and join his band as a drummer, even though he hasn't played since seventh grade.

Who is he kidding? He can't do this. He sees it in the eyes of his perfect kid brother, Dayle, as well as his military dad, the "disappointed dysfunctional parent."

But with Curt's help, Troy learns to look past himself. He finds support in unexpected places. But it's not until Curt is hospitalized that Troy finally has the guts to really take a risk.

This is a fast-paced book. K. L. Going immerses the reader in the world of punk rock through the eyes of the fat kid who yearns to have people really look at him. She has a great sense of humor that shines with lines of comparison, like when Troy compares himself to Dayle before the big gig. Troy thinks Dayle looks like he's "ready to win the Super Bowl, while I'm ready to heave into one." Ms. Going does an amazing job of getting into the psyche of the fat kid. There is a fair amount of rough language, but even so, this book rocks!

Fierce and fearless, The Glimmering Room beckons readers down into the young speaker’s dark underworld, and because we are seduced by Cruz’s startling imagery and language rich with “Death’s outrageous music,” we follow willingly. Peopled with “ambassadors from the Netherworld”—the orphaned and abused, the lost and addicted—Cruz leads us through this “traveling minstrel show / Called girlhood—” which is at once tragic and magical.

Review
“Each writer’s new collection is a bracing meditation on mortality...Ms. Cruz’s poems are an ecstatic overdose of language and emotion...Her razor-wire stanzas in The Glimmering Room, even better than her fine debut, Ruin (Alice James Books, 2006), are full of too-young desolation angels, ‘the other almost-girls’ and ‘the boys who want to die.’...This powerful poetry is a heart offering by way of Ms. Cruz’s ancestor-sisters Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath.”—Dana Jennings, New York Times Review

Review
“…to read these poems is to continually plummet…The Glimmering Room is a savage and stunningly coherent collection that turns the so-called ‘post-confessional’ mode on its head.” (Cate Marvin)

“Cruz’s characters…are perpetually on the edge of oblivion. Only the intensity and sympathy of Cruz’s attention keeps them from passing over into disaster.” (Joel Brouwer)

Painful
By Mariam
When I was reading these poems (filled with drugs, violence, pain, sex, hospitals, confusion) I found myself re-living every agonizing moment in my life. I was just so in tune with the troubled psyche of the narrator and my own. It was really interesting for me to meet the author, Cynthia Cruz, because she is not anything like what you imagine when you read her poems. I thought she was going to be this goth chick with wild hair and dark circles under her eyes. She was actually one of the sweetest and gentlest poets I have ever met. So I liked her poems, but I just can't rate them 5 stars because it was really hard for me to read them all in one sitting. They put me in a really dark place.

Der Blaue Reiter
By mrc
In Cruz’s The Glimmering Room there becomes a bridge from one version of existence to another. Some places are uncomfortable and a little scary. Metaphor and image become primary and visceral, beautiful and abrupt. These poems are Night Train meets creation, and each poem gives more with each reading, a Der Blaue Reiter impressionistic gift. Die Brücke.

Cruz’s poems are singular and powerful and original. This is an important book by a gifted artist.

Exciting step into the danger zone
By Gregg Taylor Banter author of Wolves and Wildflowers
These poems ride the dangerous rails between beauty and decadence . Or is it the magical beauty bof debauchery that Cruz is able and talented enough to pull off. An exciting step into the danger zone. An attention to the color and bueaty of language , an attention to the beauty of the rhythm of the language . Lean as can be, yet containing the whole story.

Excellent new version of the original. The issues are clear and interesting. For everyone that has been teaching in the traditional classroom, this book shows the way to transition to an online or blend curriculum. In fact, it even helps with the continuing design of the traditional model.
For the experienced online instructor, it will supply the one or two missing elements that you have been looking for.

“Complete” is the best word to describe the scope of this book
By Bancha Srikacha
“Complete” is the best word to describe the scope of this book. It covers everything from high-level rationales for designing an online course to best practices in document design. Guidelines for producing audio and video media are also included. The companion website, Essentials of Online Course Design (http://essentialsofonlinecoursedesign.com/), adds an extra dimension to the book, offering additional resources for deeper exploration.

It’s an excellent and easy-to-understand introduction for educators on how to make sense of and effectively use LMSs at their institutions. Even if not teaching online, the strategies in this book are an extension of core sound teaching principles that any instructor will be able to apply to create effective technology-enhanced teaching and learning experiences.

Review
At the Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawaii, we use Disabled Village Children to teach teachers and family members how to support the related services needs of children with severe disabilities... The book works well for us because it supports simple English with wonderful drawings. Everyone whom we train speaks English as a second language, and everyone appreciates the pictures that illustrate the written concepts. The book clearly explains the most common disabilities and provides good examples of interventions that can be done using locally available materials. We have made wooden and PVC equipment adapted from designs in the book, and used many of the ideas in the book to support the needs of children on very remote islands. The ideas are creative and address basic needs of children with disabilities all over the world. --Katherine Ratliffe, PhD, PT. , Center on Disability Studies, University of Hawaii

Disabled Village Children is a powerful, engaging, and readable reference for (developing world) health and rehabilitation workers. It provides ideas and techniques relevant for the novice and the veteran, as well as for the interested observer... The power of Disabled Village Children derives from its simplicity as well as from its recurring theme of a "bottom-up" approach to health and rehabilitation in rural communities. --Marc Krizack, Rehabilitation Consciousness

Disabled Village Children is the benchmark manual on community-based rehabilitation... (Hesperian's) new series of books on early intervention for children with disabilities are beautiful as well as extremely useful. --US Agency for International Development

I used the book and found it to be very helpful to families.
By A Customer
As a former PCV in The West Indies, I used this book for ideas to share with families who had special needs children. It has many low cost alternatives to equipment that is often too costly for families without resources. The book also addresses the need for a handicapped child to do useful work in the family unit, something that is often forgotten. Self esteem can be taught if a child is given tasks, however small. I had to leave the book at the PeaceCorps Library when I left, and think that no Early Interventionist, OT or PT should be without a copy. A copy in Spanish and a copy in English would be a great asset.

Very useful book for health care workers.
By B. Alter
I'm a pediatric physical therapist who works with many people from Mexico and Latin American countries. This book (I often use the spanish version, also on Amazon.com) contains very useful information that I can share with families to help them better understand their disabled child's conditions. It has many creative methods of building equipment for little to no money that are important in our days of managed care.
There are some conditions, like polio, that are uncommon here in America. However, some of my imigrent families have children that have had polio. I used this book to make up for gaps in my own training. In fact, I've learned something useful from almost any page. This book belongs in the car of any therapist, (PT, OT) or person who works with disabled imigrent children. I highly reccomend it.

Very helpful for preparing for the exam
By Chad A
This book is very well organized, and the information was useful in preparing for the test. I was worried since it is considerably shorter than the other books, but the material matches the content outline from the bulletin, and they do a great job telling you what to pay particular attention to before the exam. I have previously purchased the first two books in the series as well, and I have passed all three parts using the series as my main means of preparation, supplemented by some online study questions from another company.

Passed within 1 month on 1st try. Book closely resembles material. It provides what you need. I will admit I am a kind of sort professional student/test taker but yet and still I know good study boods/guides when I see them. This is a good investment. No need to get anything additional except the Workbook that comes with the set of books.

Great book, it is the only source you need to pass the 3rd exam. A good supplementary source is GLEIM for its testing questions,
By Tekniq
Great book, it is the only source you need to pass the 3rd exam. A good supplementary source is GLEIM for its testing questions, but the book is sufficient enough, if you study it well. I am a licensed enrolled agent, thanks to Christy's books.

Also, the 3rd exam is not too difficult, it has an above 80% passing rate, but you still have to study well.

From Publishers Weekly
Brandeis psychologist Maslow (1908-1970), a founder of humanistic psychology, was an uneasy hero of the 1960s counterculture. As spiritualistic fads swept the country, he scolded Esalen Institute instructors for their smugness and warned his followers that too much inwardness is not psychologically healthy. This apostle of self-actualization and creative "peak experiences" was an intensely private man who rarely discussed his own mystical highs. Hoffman, biographer of Wilhelm Reich, has interviewed Maslow's friends, family and students, and while he never fully pierces his subject's calm, scholarly demeanor, his thoughtful biography has its rewards. We meet Maslow the youthful sexologist of the 1930s (his findings were championed decades later by feminists); the socialist-leaning rebel who married his cousin and lived on a commune; the professor who actively disliked conformist students. The first full-scale biography of Maslow, this profile will be of interest to the many people touched by his humanistic vision of personal growth. Photos not seen by PW.

$18.95. psych This is the first comprehensive biography of Maslow (1908-1970), a founder of the humanistic psychology movement. Skillfully revealing Maslow's attractive personality and enormous zeal, clinical psychologist Hoffman shows how the early career was distinguished by rigorous empirical researchspecifically in his studies in dominance and motivationand his later career by an admirable creative clarity regarding a comprehensive theory of human motivation and a metapsychology of higher needs and aspirations. Given Maslow's many distinguished friends and mentors, this captivating and sympathetic biography is a major intellectual history of four decades of American psychology. Fascinating and visionary, Abraham Harold Maslow (1908-1970) pioneered revolutionary ideas that helped form modern psychology and laid the foundation of the human side of management and marketing. His lifetime of discoveries in motivation and personality transcended academic psychology, and extended into the major business fields of management and marketing. Maslow also loved to explore nascent, barely perceptible social trends and speculate boldly about their long-term consequences. He was the originator of such important concepts as the hierarchy of human needs, self-actualization, higher motivation, team decision-making and business synergy.
All business students-not just of management development and organizational behaviour-should read this seminal biography. Critically acclaimed in its first edition and now revised and updated for this paperback edition, The Right to Be Human is a fascinating portrait of one of the seminal thinkers of the twentieth century-at once a vivid biography of a truly original personality and an intellectual journey to the very source of how we think about and manage our businesses today.

The Right to be Human: Abraham Maslow
By Kim Burdick
.
Hoffman's well-researched biography of the Abraham Maslow, founder of humanistic psychology, is written with both warmth and precision. Unlike many biographers, Hoffman never loses sight of his goal. It is a solid biography without frills.

Maslow was both a dreamer and a realist. His views of human behavior were holistic, powerful and practical. Many of his ideas were immediately endorsed and put to use, not by his academic colleagues, but by the leaders and innovators of the business community.

Almost every American sociology and psychology student knows "Maslow's Pyramid of Needs." This book will enrich the student's understanding not only of "the pyramid," but also of Maslow's enormous contributions to a multidisciplinary study of human nature.

"The Right to Be Human" is very readable and offers a heart-warming account of one man's life and thought.

A MARVELOUS AND ENLIGHTENING BIOGRAPHY OF THIS SEMINAL FIGURE
By Steven H Propp
Edward Hoffman is a clinical psychologist who has written other books such as The Man Who Dreamed of Tomorrow: A Conceptual Biography of Wilhelm Reich, The Way of Splendor: Jewish Mysticism and Modern Psychology, etc. He wrote in the Preface to this 1988 book, "Initially, my goal was simply to tell the story of Maslow's life and career in American psychology: to trace his early interests and training, his mentors and influences, and his seminal achievements in the science of human personality and motivation... But now, five years after I began this challenging project, my objectives have widened... Maslow's ideas have been badly distorted in their inevitable popularizations anad retellings... [he] has been attacked as an enemy of reason and community, a panderer to narcissism. I hope to set the record straight..." (Pg. xvi-xvii)

He points out, "To those who associate Maslow' name solely with the humanistic writing that marked his later career, it may seem surprising that he was initially impressed with laboratory experimentalism as the path to psychological knowledge. But it would be a serious mistake to dismiss his early training as irrelevant to his seminal studies of the hierarchy of needs, self-actualization, and peak-experiences." (Pg. 40)

He observes, "Maslow centered his theory of motivation on what he called the hierarchy of human needs. In essence, he contended that every person is born with a set of basic needs encompassing the physiological and including the needs for safety, belongingness or love, and self-esteem... he argued that these basic needs can be seen as making up an unfolding hierarchy... Finally, Maslow outlined the existence of another inborn human need---the need for individual fulfillment, or what he preferred to call self-actualization." (Pg. 154-155)

He argues, "Maslow was challenging the fundamental premise of modern psychology: that we can devise accurate theories about human nature by studying the mentally ill or the statistically average... Maslow suggested that although self-actualizing people are not emotionally flawless, they can serve as exemplars in the values by which they lead their lives... Maslow felt sure that he was intuitively correct and that new research methods would eventually validate his ideas." (Pg. 186-188)

In a 1956 paper on peak experiences, "He described nearly twenty common features of the peak-experience, which he associated with extreme inner health... polar opposites, like good and evil, free will and destiny, seemed transcended in such instants; everything in the cosmos was connected to everything else in a unity of splendor... Maslow noted that peak-experiences often leave profound and transformative effects in their wake..." (Pg. 226)

He notes, "Not surprisingly, Maslow's long-standing disdain for religion initially made him uneasy in the company of clergy and religionists who flocked to his lectures on peak-experiences and the B-values. It was strange to him to speak in churches, but the admiration he felt from the audiences... was very real... Although he never abandoned his own atheistic contempt for ritual observance, such conversations convinced him that his unpleasant childhood experience of Judaism had blinded him to the wisdom within it and the world's other great religions, especially their views of human nature." (Pg. 264-265) Later, Hoffman adds, "While still an atheist, he therefore stressed a kind of naturalistic mysticism, denying the traditional trappings of religion such as an afterlife, a personal God, and a divine order. For Maslow, none of these is necessary to be religious..." (Pg. 277)

This biography will be of immense help to anyone studying Maslow, humanistic psychology, or transpersonal psychology.
