Flowers are calling to all the animals of the forest, "Drink me!"—but it’s the pollinators who feast on their nectar. In rhyming poetic form and with luminous artwork, this book shows us the marvel of natural cooperation between plants, animals, and insects as they each play their part in the forest's cycle of life.

Beautiful Art, Odd but Kind of Interesting Combination of Fiction and Non-Fiction Elements
By Truthful Reviews
First, I love the cover of this book. It just looks so beautiful and festive and yet in nature!. The drawings throughout the book are equally beautiful as well. This is definitely a nonfiction book disguised as a children's rhyming book. It is an odd combination ta boot. Basically, you get 3 pages of cute rhymes about the flowers calling a mammal, then finding out the mammal really has no interest in flowers. But then the flower calls an insect, who definitely has an interest in flowers. After the three pages of rhymes, you have two pages of how those insects discussed in the previous three pages actually interact with flowers. It is interesting stuff. After that set is done. The book goes back to 3 more pages of mammals and insects followed by 2 pages of non-fiction. It is an odd jumbled way to tell a story or write a non-fiction book. But this is ultimately what makes the book unique and interesting. All in all I enjoyed the book. I think I would have rather seen the non-fiction part of the book toward the back all in one place. Rather than it breaking up the rhythm of the rhymes in the fiction part of the book.

Stunning art work, lovely message for people of all ages
By Quickbeam
I was urged to look at getting this book by a fellow rose grower who knew I grow old garden, "bee-o-philic" roses. It is just a wonderful combination of artistry and thought. What I love most about it is how universal the appeal is; a pre-verbal child can enjoy this as much as any adult. It is a rare joy to see a work this lovingly crafted with such wide audience draw. You won't regret owning "Flowers Are Calling".

As a result of a rigorous, methodical process that (ISC)² follows to routinely update its credential exams, it has announced that enhancements will be made to both the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) credential, beginning April 15, 2015. (ISC)² conducts this process on a regular basis to ensure that the examinations and subsequent training and continuing professional education requirements encompass the topic areas relevant to the roles and responsibilities of today’s practicing information security professionals.

Refreshed technical content has been added to the official (ISC)² CISSP CBK to reflect the most current topics in the information security industry today. Some topics have been expanded (e.g., asset security, security assessment and testing), while other topics have been realigned under different domains. The result is an exam that most accurately reflects the technical and managerial competence required from an experienced information security professional to effectively design, engineer, implement and manage an organization’s information security program within an ever-changing security landscape.

The domain names have been updated as follows:

CISSP Domains, Effective April 15, 2015

  • Security and Risk Management (Security, Risk, Compliance, Law, Regulations, Business Continuity)
  • Asset Security (Protecting Security of Assets)
  • Security Engineering (Engineering and Management of Security)
  • Communications and Network Security (Designing and Protecting Network Security)
  • Identity and Access Management (Controlling Access and Managing Identity)
  • Security Assessment and Testing (Designing, Performing, and Analyzing Security Testing)
  • Security Operations (Foundational Concepts, Investigations, Incident Management, Disaster Recovery)
  • Software Development Security (Understanding, Applying, and Enforcing Software Security)
  • Some candidates may be wondering how these updates affect training materials for the CISSP credential. As part of the organization’s comprehensive education strategy and certifying body best practices, (ISC)² training materials do not teach directly to its credential examinations. Rather, (ISC)² Education is focused on teaching the core competencies relevant to the roles and responsibilities of today’s practicing information security professional. It is designed to refresh and enhance the knowledge of experienced industry professionals.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND FIXED
    By D. Gillette
This very boring book is more for a security professional to have on his or her desk as a reference rather than a study tool for the CISSP exam. There is a LOT of material in it that you don't need to know for the exam. For example, DR is gone over in painstaking detail. That's fine, but the CISSP exam is a mile wide/inch deep, so you will end up wasting a lot of studying time. Also there is a lot of redundancy throughout the book so more wasted studying time.

My main beef with the book is that it's unnecessarily wordy and highbrow. Here's an example.

"Specifically, what the security architect needs to accomplish through the investment of this time is to gain a better understanding of the usage scenarios that each stakeholder brings to the system in question and what the intricacies of those scenarios are in order to perform a risk analysis against them, and as a result, he or she will gain a better understanding of the powerful threats and vulnerabilities to be addressed as part of any defenses that may be planned and implemented".

Good gawd, I almost fell asleep while typing that out. That sentence could easily be cut in half.

    Here's another example.

"Several common methods of cryptography exist including stream-based and block ciphers. The information security professional must have a basic understanding of both to ensure further understanding of encryption implementations."

The second sentence is unnecessary. It just adds weight to the book. There are a ton of sentences like that all throughout the book.

    One more.

"Computers are inherently designed for predictability not randomness. Computers are so thoroughly deterministic that they have a hard time generating high-quality randomness. Therefore, special purpose built hardware and software called "random number generators," or RNG's, are needed for cryptography applications. The U.S. federal government provides recommendations on deterministic random number generators through the NIST. An international standard for random number generation suitable for cryptographic systems is sponsored by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 18031. A rigorous statistical analysis of the output is often needed to have confidence in such RNG algorithms. A random number generator based solely on deterministic computation done solely by a computer cannot be regarded as a true random number generator sufficient in lack of predictability for cryptographic applications because its output is inherently predictable."

The last sentence is totally unnecessary. That was already stated in the first two sentences. I could give you many, many more examples but you get the picture.

The publisher must have wanted to get this book out quickly to capitalize on the new CISSP exam so they opted to skip proofreading.

    Here's some proof for you.

"Iris scanning is the most accurate biometric technology."
"Retina scan devices are probably the most accurate biometric available today".

That's 4 points down the drain if I get a question on the exam about the most accurate biometric.

    I especially love this one.

"Some areas to consider are actions such as planning for delivery of office supplies to the alternate site, setting up a package delivery account for the alternate site like UPS or Airborne...."

Airborne hasn't been around since 2003 when it got acquired by DHL.

Go with the latest Shon Harris book, she does a much better job of explaining the material. Although it doesn't reflect the new 8 domains, it still has everything you need to know to pass the latest CISSP exam, and you won't be bored to death.

I hope (ISC)2 puts out a revised version
    By Damien
After reading through the entire book, I am very disappointed with what I received for my money. The book appears as though it was put together in a hurry. I am missing 47 pages out of the middle of it (455 - 502), and there is a duplicate of the tail end of Domain 3 at the beginning of Domain 4. There are numerous spelling and grammatical errors, and one must hunt throughout the book to gather all of the information about a specific topic...as the index is extremely limited.

I am sending my copy back for a refund. I understand that (ISC)2 had to update the CBK, but they could have taken a little extra time for editing, or could have done a better job of planning ahead for a release that coincided with the April 2015 changes.

No sir, I don't like it.
    By josh
Just to make sure there was one less copy of this book in existence, I put a few 5.56 rounds through it (see photos). I thought about selling it, but the fact that I took money from someone in exchange for this book would weigh too heavy on my conscious.

Would not recommend. Author rambles too much about unneeded information. I'm a very studious person, but this book is INCREDIBLY difficult to read. The author will often use a paragraph to convey superfluous information instead of writing one concise sentence.

    ***For example***

Dogs are often bigger than cats.

    Vs

Dogs are often bigger than cats. Because of this, they require more food and water, as well as a larger living space. This results in increased costs and extra energy expenditure to facilitate an adequate living situation for the dogs. In some cases, dogs and cats are the same size. When this occurs, the maintenance expenditure is about the same for both dogs and cats.

I'm not joking or exaggerating about this example either.

As someone who is a member of Techexams and has studied for many IT certs and done thousands of practice questions, I can say the end-of-chapter questions are low quality as well. This book was obviously rushed and it's a shame because the cover is so beautiful.

Note to author/publishes/editors or whoever let this book reach the public: why would you do this? Is there a minimum page requirement issued by ISC2 or something?? If you're going to force a book to be 1400 pages, fill it with less trash and higher quality practice questions.

A deceptively good premise, an infuriating narrator and mediocre writing
    By The Book Eater
WARNING: This review contains mentions of wanting to throttle, strangle and maim book characters, and includes potentially traumatizing pictures.

Just look at this summary. Go ahead, read it.
It's amazing, isn't it? And the cover. It's gorgeous. The premise is mysterious, intriguing and lovely. I was SO excited for this book, you don't even know. I think my entire twitter feed knew the instant it was out.

This is why I'm going to be a little hard on it. Because my expectations were high, and there weren't met. At. All.

    About the narrator:

I wanted to violently shake her/strangle her for half the book (I'm usually a non-violent person). UGH. What a vapid, idiotic, insensitive, shallow, boring person. She's everything I hate in a character. No backbone, changing loyalties, and just this carelessness that I HATE.

"Sure, I'd been kicked out of school. I couldn't seem to go more than an hour without craving a caffeinated beverage. And a guy I'd met while I was dead had popped by unexpectedly and caused me to be slapped with a seven-figure civil suit.
But I was feeling positive about the future."

    ... Excuse me???
LOL my daddy has to pay more than a million dollars to a guy but I don't care!

    throttlesnarrator.jpg

    About the writing:

It draaaaaaaagged. She spent ages telling us about how she had been in the Underworld, and some bad "incident" had happened after she came back, but that the incident was different from the accident, and blablablablabla. My god, just get ON with it! The book is just so full of plot holes (like when Pierce loses her necklace, but somehow still has it around her neck?) and stilted, stretched out mock-obstacles.
Also, just like in The Goddess Test (which is also a retelling of the Persephone/Hades myth), the narrator keeps talking about "that". Apparently, spelling out the word sex is a capital offense.

Oh, and by the way, Pierce hates Greek mythology, because it's "complicated and weird and had nothing to do with reality." How the hell do you want me to empathize with her? Seriously? SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHO HOMER IS.

    About the romance:

It was ridiculous. And the love interest? His name is John. I don't even know what to say to that. He's a one-dimensional, pseudo swoon worthy "dark" guy that we didn't get to know at all. He behaved all aloof-like and jerky and moody and suddenly bam! His lips came came down over mine etc etc. Of course, the rest of the world ~vanished instantly. Eye roll.

One thing I learned from this book: tassels?
BAD. EVIL. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.

Needless to say, I would recommend this book to no one. I know it looks so good and you want to like it sooo bad, but... Yeah. No.

    Compelling Concepts, Weak Execution
    By Linnaly
On the surface, Abandon sounded GREAT - a dark retelling of the Persephone myth? Yes! Unfortunately, the book fails to deliver on the thrill - in large part, I think, because this is just the first book in the new Abandon series.

It takes half the book for Pierce to finally confirm everything that happened two years ago, when she had her near-death experience and a pivotal encounter with John, a death deity who seems to be in charge of the Underworld. Pierce is an incredibly coy narrator: she hints at the same things/events REPEATEDLY - and there seems to be no reason why she doesn't expand on her thought right then and there. It's well within the last 1/3 of the book where we finally get a confirmation of everything we've suspected, and not from Pierce but from an adult cemetery sexton, who gives us the explanation in this long chunk of dialogue.

Pierce means well, but her repetitive narration and the poor pacing of the story/unfolding of events made this book difficult for me to emotionally engage with. I do like the glimpse we get of John (unfortunately, he doesn't actually appear much in this book) - he is incredibly intriguing. The Underworld and elements of Greek mythology isn't fully explored here, but what is hinted as is a nice take, and I will probably pick up the second book, Underworld, when it comes out.

    Very disappointed!
    By Misha
Writing this review actually make me sad and guilty because I hate writing anything negative about a Meg Cabot book. I first discovered Princess Diaries when I was 11 years old and fell instantly in love with Meg Cabot's books. I loved the Princess Diaries series and the Mediator series even more! I haven't a read a Meg Cabot book since I was around 16, but I have happy memories of her books. Now I just wish I had not read Abandon, just so I could preserve those memories.

Abandon is a new take on the Hades-Persephone myth. Pierce, the main protagonist, finds herself in the "Underworld" similar to that of Hades', after she nearly drowns. There she meets John, whom she had previously met at her grandfather's funeral when she was a little kid. She somehow manages to escape the Underworld, but John seems to appear everywhere she goes, especially when she's in trouble. She can't seem to escape from him. After an incident, she moves to an island where her mother's family lives. However, trouble seems to follow her there too..

When I first read the synopsis for the book, I nearly fainted from excitement. The premise seemed so enticing; and I was sure it was going to be as amazing as The Mediator series. The reality? The synopsis is actually hundred times more exciting than the book. I feel really deceived! Nothing actually happens throughout the book. Most of the book is about how Pierce landed in the Underworld and how she escaped from it; and her previous meetings with John. I kept waiting for something even remotely exciting to happen, but the book finished and nothing happened.

I would not have minded the lack of a plot, if the character development was well done. However, every character is one-dimensional. I cannot remember liking a single character. As for Pierce, I hated her! There is not one likable quality about her.The only words I can use for her is - Spoilt brat! She's selfish, shallow, hypocritical and appears to be lacking a brain. She is portrayed as being someone who is not materialistic, yet she does and say stuff which makes her exactly so. When she gets into trouble, she says things like "You want money? Fine! My father will give it to you" . (Please keep in mind that's not an actual quote from the book). Her father ends up with a seven figure lawsuit due to Pierce's actions, but her reaction to it is as if it's an amusing thing. As in - "Haha How funny that I caused my father to be sued for seven million!" Seriously! Througout the book, it's been repeated again and again how "caring" she is. I just don't see it! None of her actions make her look "caring".

I don't know what to say about John because I know nothing about him. He's just another one of those generic dark, "bad boy" love interests with a tragic past. I do not understand how Pierce falls for him, considering that she seems to hate him for the most part. John gets angry often, sometimes violently angry and aggressive. He even tries to keep Pierce in the underworld against her wishes. He creeped me out and frightened me, but didn't make me go weak at the knees (as I suppose I was expected to?)

I missed sweet, awkward Mia from Princess Diaries and snarky, kick-ass Susannah from The Mediator; I missed the humor that sets Meg Cabot's books apart; I missed Jesse (from The Mediator) and Michael (from Princess Diaries) who were truly swoon-worthy.

    Overall:
It saddens me to say so about a Meg Cabot book, but it has every element that annoys me in a YA PNR novel:
    - Annoying main protagonist who makes me want to inflict some kind of violence on her (and believe me I am not a violent person!)
    - Dark dangerous love interest (I suppose he was supposed to make me swoon, but he only made me yawn - he was that boring!)
    - Actual Plot = Nil

I wanted to give this book one star. The extra star is because of how much I used to love the author's books.

    No-nonsense, old fashion Weightlifting
    By Mohamed F. El-Hewie
My first impression when I opened a light and skinny envelop of the delivered book was that of opening some business correspondence letter. The book is only 132 pages, of black and weight print that could be produced on a home printer, the era preceding of hp-laser or inkjet. Though the first edition came in 1997, it immediately revived my memory of the struggle to print and publish my own book on those days. It is a painful experience for authors to meddle with so many hurdles in order to get their information to the reader. Then, there is my bias in favor of a fellow weightlifter attempting to maintain a dying sport form retiring to history archives.

In total contravention to the inclusive format of Drechsler's Weightlifting Encyclopedia and El-Hewie's Essentials of Weightlifting and Strength Training, Cissik sticks to the hardcore of old fashion Weightlifting. The classical two lifts; Clean and Jerk and Snatch, are described, together with their immediate supporting exercises. The back, front, and overhead squat; deadlift with various handgrips and height of pull; goodmorning in standing, seating, and ground positions; pullover, and stretching is all that trainees need to advance in weightlifting. That is a bold and daring confrontation of appealing consumerism that thrives on promoting expensive machines, fancy exercise accessories, and endless exercises that do little, if any, good to fitness.

The simplicity, clarity, and accuracy of Cissik's Introduction outweighs it poor production quality and attests to the author's courage to stand tall on substance. Although, the book is intended as an introduction, the above mentioned attributes make the book practical and convenient for modern day busy people. In addition, each chapter begins with neat tabulated highlights and basic contents and ends with a list of references. Inside the chapters, the author places the reference citation where needed in every page.

    Its drawbacks are:

    (1) Complete omission of individualized peripheral training exercises. Modern weightlifters rival bodybuilders; on bulk and definition, and powerlifters; on peak isometric strength. Many young weightlifters could not attain the astronomically high level of modern international records because of lack of muscular bulk. Cissik's old fashion training emphasizes the technique of lifting and periodization for robust, explosive power, yet falls short on massing slow twitching muscle fibers. Those require dedicated bodybuilding training during off season or prior to committing to protracted competitive weightlifting career.

The fear that bodybuilding and powerlifting exercises would do away with the mental skill, specific to the explosive full range of motion and highly coordinated dynamics of weightlifting, is well understood and recognized by experienced lifters and coaches. However, modern lifters have sufficient resources to ease the highly toned and acutely inflamed structures caused by such repetitive and depleting modes of exercising. Yoga, Pilates, Stretch, UV booths, saunas, and massage are few such modern remedies for the side effects of strengthening through controlled motion exercising. That however raises the stakes of heart and cellular reserves. Could the heart tolerate multiple overloads? Could the cellular metabolism adapt its enzymatic machinery to oppositely demanding activities? or, could the trainee have access to adequate health knowledge in dealing with such double sword training modes? Cissik's answer is: simplicity; a wise, safe, and practical choice.

    (2) Jumping straight in the air during the pull isn't scientific. Although few great lifters do jump, the laws of mechanics forbid jumping. It wastes energy. Explosive extension isn't synonymous with jumping. Cissik is rightfully insisting on not spreading the feet sideways, yet wrongfully advises jumping. Jumping might be stimulating, yet wasteful.

    (3) The deep squat during the amortization phase portrays to some that "deep" is a requirement for lifting. It is better to emphasize that squatting should be as high as it is needed to catch the barbell at its (the barbell) final destination. Unnecessarily deep squat should be reserved for training, stretching, and strengthening.

    Excellent Book!
    By chipkent@tamu.edu
This book is MUCH better than the first edition. The beginning of the book is a concise description of the Olympic exercises and associated assistance exercises. This is good for the beginning lifter. The second half of the book is on workout design. It is EXCELLENT and draws heavily on EASTERN EUROPEAN texts (They always have the best lifters!). The book is worth buying for this section. Powerlifters and fitness buffs can use the principles outlined here to greatly improve their progress. Every chapter is heavily referenced for those who are interested in learning more.

    A Rare Find
    By W. Chill
There are not many books published on the sport of Olympic and Olympic-style lifting as the sport's popularity has dropped steadily since the American dominance in the 1960's when the great Tommy Kono was on the lifting platform. I was hard-pressed to find many books on the sport, but was delighted when I found this one. Cissik does a good job of explaining the complicated techniques involved in the various Olypic (style) lifts. As one who never did the lifts but is trying to learn how, this book is spot on. Learning such moves without the aid of a coach is extremely difficult, but Cissik's explanations and photos are the next best thing to live instruction or even video. He also gives the reader sample programs and routines to follow to get ready for lifting competition. The book is no high-tech glossy, but a real world, down and dirty manual for learning the sport. The print, presentation, and format of the book has an almost scholarly feel, perhaps even unconsciously so which seems fitting considering where the sport of Olympic Lifting now resides in contemporary America.
