"... Whether you read these poems to a newfound attraction or your spouse, they are written in order to captivate your lover's mind and draw them into your embrace ... When I first picked up this book I was incredulous of its abilities to seduce. I found myself disbelieving its abilities to "program a woman's unconscious mind...to fall helplessly in love..." As a strong, independent woman, I did not like the idea that I could be "programmed." As a poetry writer myself, I was even more doubtful of the quality of poems I would be reading. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Phil Billitz's Hypnopoetics. After reading ... I did find myself relaxed and more open to romance from my own partner... I do recommend it for any couple looking to take their relationship to a more intimate level or to established couples looking to spice up their love life."

A unique collection but with a misleading title

Phil Billitz has made a significant contribution to the literature of erotica and I find the testimonials quite believable. I have only two criticisms of the book, the first which can be said of many similar works: the offerings might be just a bit repetitive. The other is with the title. In the book's forward, Mr. Billitz admits to a literary agent that the poems are not really poems at all but hypnotic inductions.

This is an admirable display of honesty and suggests the author knows what a poem is. Mark Yakich, a professor at Loyola University who teaches creative writing, wrote in the Atlantic, "A poem helps the mind play with its well-trod patterns of thought, and can even help reroute those patterns by making us see the familiar anew."

I've no doubt many of these poems can be as effective as a Sinatra album in a candlelit room to stir the embers of passion that might be lying dormant in a woman's mind. But do they have the power to help a man see a woman differently--that is, in a way that
"reroutes old patterns"?

The danger, here, is that readers will see these inductions as poems, use them merely as inductions, and by relying on Mr. Billitz impressive athleticism with metaphors and poetic language, employ these inductions in a one-size-fits-all manner.

I see nothing wrong with doing that but the man who allows Mr. Billitz to become Cyrano to his Christian will eventually be found out when he must put into words what he cannot because he has not immersed himself deeply enough within himself to discover the simple yet profound "poetry" of his own feelings.

In the end, that's what most women want. We don't have to be Pablo Neruda or Gabriel Garcia Marquez but only a man who looks at a woman and sees something that no other man has or could.

Intimate, beautifully written and will make you melt.

Hypnopoetic is a book of poems simply about poems. I have never done a review for a poem before. Although I have another one set soon. I was asked to review this and since it looked so interesting, I thought I would give it a go. The author, Phil Billitz, does a wonderful job with these poems. Now given the cover, I was expecting something a bit erotic. But the poems aren't really that way. They are more about intimacy which I liked, but they are still quite sexy. I definitely understand the hypnotic factor. These poems were just beautiful. They weren't cheesy or corny. I can't really test it, but being a woman, if a read these to me, I would be putty in his hands.

I love how the poems are intimate and deal with real connections and love. The poems flowed beautifully and were quite emotional. I am not the most girly chick out there, but I think it would be very hard for even the toughest chick to pass this up. I will be keeping this book around for the future. I do recommend checking this out. So guys, if you screwed up on Valentine's Day, I think she will forgive you if you use some of these poems. They are magic.

Tried It and It Works

I bought the book in order to see if worked. It does! I read the first poem to several women that I know and every on wanted to hear more. I've been reading one poem a week to a smaller number and all are showing interest in wanting to be with me. The response is so strong that I have backed off reading it to most of the women (I can only handle a few) because of the strong response. I completely endorse this book.

Wonderful book! Wish I'd read this years ago!

As I read Thirteeners I thought of the companies I'd worked for in the past in the context of the principles in this book. I wish they all had been following this wisdom. Despite management proclamations of goals and mission statements, we were never aligned in a common purpose. It was always "us and them." There was little accountability or connectedness or creating a future not based upon the past. Goals were incremental.

I own a small company now and I'm creating a whole new future as a result of reading this book, a future not based on "what's going to happen anyway," but on what I say is possible. The idea of identifying "what's missing" instead of "what's wrong" is one of the best aspects of the author's suggestions. It removes blame and so, timid action. When we set goals now and review our progress we can see what's missing, make promises to take the actions needed, and work together with accountability for an exciting result.
Great book! Wish I'd read it years ago.

The first claim made by the author is shocking – 87% of companies fail to successfully execute a pre-determined key strategy in a given year. Imagine the wasted cost and opportunity. Imagine what could be achieved if things just worked.

In other words, you want to be operating in the winning zone, being a so-called Thirteener – one of the 13% who consistently execute strategy and understand the necessity of interaction and connectedness.

In this book, the author manages to raise a number of provocative points that might give you the necessary boost to transform your business or professional dealings. Noting a direct correlation between true leaders and motivators of companies and their companies succeeding financially and being acknowledged and acclaimed as a “Best Place To Work”, the author does grab your attention, adding that such companies can achieve two to three times greater bottom-line results, making it a real, measurable, actionable and potentially worthwhile difference.

The author believes that his strategy can work for everyone, whether you are a for-profit organisation or a not-for-profit venture. The strategic growth and development can be the same and it is the same reasons for potential failure that may be dragging it down.

Leadership starts from the top – an obvious claim you might think yet there is a real shortage of great leaders. A confident, humble, forward-thinking, mature and authentic leader who has the capacity to be approachable and vulnerable is the key. That might sound counter-intuitive in this macho business world but a great leader is the custodian of ideas, employing hopefully the best available talent to work towards a common goal. As the author notes: “Authentic leaders lead out loud by displaying their vulnerability and by asking for and accepting input from their employees so that everyone can contribute to and “own” the company’s strategy for the future. For many leaders it’s scary to let employees see that you don’t have all the answers, but if you want them to commit to making your organisation unstoppable, it’s critical.”

It can be a hard concept to accept, even if you believe in the theory, yet the potential rewards are great. The author adds: “When people feel they belong to something bigger and more meaningful than themselves, they jump at almost any opportunity to contribute. They will voice their views, add their suggestions for innovation, and offer anything else that will improve “their” organisation and help it exceed even your expectations. However, when people feel excluded — for example, if they’re not involved in planning the work they are going to perform - they typically fail to care.”

You won’t transform your business through good luck, a nicely written mission statement or a bit of hope. You will need to get your hands dirty and drive the transformation in a structured way. You will change how you look at your business and this will permeate change because of your changing attitude, your changing use of language and possibly your change in management and leadership style. This positive change will be contagious. The dots will start to be connected, everyone will start pulling in the same direction. It is not going to be a perfect, utopian world. There will still be friction, some conflict and disagreement yet this may be more focussed, well meaning and collegiate. The author likens it to a marriage. “Incompatibility is actually the foundation of a successful marriage. The same is true for organisations. Without conflict, we become accustomed to equilibrium and try not to ‘rock the boat’, yet without conflict (or chaos), a complex, evolving system - whether it’s a marriage or an organisation - withers and dies.”

Certainly this book gets the brain cells whirring. It is controversial with a small C because it challenges the status quo, yet it is not necessarily revolutionary but common sense. Sadly, however, as we have seen, most companies seemingly are not overburdened with common sense, hence the prevalence of the “Thirteeners”.

Life Changing Book

Thirteeners has truly changed the conversations and the value system in our company. Before reading Thirteeners, I was focused on the "doing" of tasks to advance our company goals. Now that I have read Thirteeners, I realized it's important to first understand WHO I am for others and how they see us "being" for them. It's a total shift in perspective and one that radically shifted my business. Dan talks about "Connection Points" which are 10 core values that Thirteeners live by. One of the connection points that resonates with me the most is: Contribution. Allowing others to contribute to the overall vision and in the way in which we operate our business. Allowing my team to contribute has opened them up to feel as though they are part of the overall vision and it's unbelievable how much more gets advanced on a day to day basis. Thank you Dan.

Nils Dalarsson has been with the Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Theoretical Physics in Stockholm, Sweden, since 1999. His research and teaching experience spans 32 years. Former academic and private sector affiliations include University of Virginia, Uppsala University, FSB Corporation, France Telecom Corporation, Ericsson Corporation, and ABB Corporation. He holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics, an MSc in Engineering Physics, and an MSc in Education.

Mirjana Dalarsson is affiliated with the Research and Development program at Ericsson Corporation. She holds a Licentiate degree in Engineering Physics and has more than 25 years of research and teaching experience. All the Math You Need for GR

This book, alone, was what got me through my General Relativity course. The text we were using didn't include much math, and the professor didn't want to discuss the mathematical aspects of what we were doing. So I came upon this book armed with a vague physical understanding, but mathematically clueless. Fortunately, this book seems to have been written for precisely such a situation!

In a remarkably clear and concise manner, this book manages to:
- introduce the notations that are commonly used
- demonstrate how a physical system can be represented using the new formalisms
- outline the common mathematical operations that can be performed under this formalism
- describe how these operations are different from similar operations that the reader is already familar with
- show how these mathematical operations are physically relevant to a particular system

The other mathematical texts on this topic all seem to start off slowly with several chapters full of things that, as a physicist, I don't particularly want to know about. This book, by contrast, simply skips right to the parts that are relevant to relativistic calculations, and as a result the reader need not waste time trying to understand mathematical concepts that will not be useful to him.

In short, it's absolutely perfect if you need help with the mathematical aspects of relativity. Its physical explanations are brief, however, so if it's the physical concepts themselves that are troubling you, it might be better to start with a more descriptive book.

One of the best

This book starts out with a walk through the gymnastics of manipulating tensor indices's. Tensors can have any number of indices's attached to them. Learning to work with these indices's comes up many times for example in QFT(Quantum Field Theory). It is really basic, but until you see it done a number of time(as in this book) it can be quite confusing. This book teaches you to do this, and does a very good job. This includes the famous Einstein summation convention.

The book also covers co-variant derivatives, which are really important for taking derivatives in curvilinear coordinate since the unit or basis vectors change. Again the book does an excellent job of explaining this. This leads to the next subject of Christoffel Symbols, which come up when taking a co-variant derivative. The book explains these in terms easy to understand.

The book then goes into differential geometry. This is where the book really shines. This section is really a critical part, since you will need the ideas learned here to derive Einstein Field Equations. There is just the right amount of theory here so you can understand what is going on under the hood, but not too so much that you lose all prospective of what is going on.

Then this book covers special relativity. The book really shines here since the approach is a mature one, not watering down the math, but not over doing it either. The book has now taught you about Tensor Analysis, so the author can use it to cover special relativity. A lot of special rel. books do not cover special rel. using this mature approach, they tend to water down the math, but this book has prepared you for it so why not use it.

Also in the Special Rel. sections your Electrodynamic skills will be improved. You are now re-introduced to Maxwell's equations. You might have seen some of the mathematics before in an Electrodynamics course, but this book has given you the math skills you need to really understand it. So now you learn the tensor way to express Maxwell's equations. At this point you start feeling good about your Tensor Analysis skills. You seem to feel the whole universe coming together.

Then the moment you have been reading the book for. The author's start covering General Relativity. As you start reading this part of the book you start feeling good. You are really able to follow what is being done, because the book has done it's job and you have all the background to follow along. Then the most magic moment comes as you are shown how the metric tensor(g) is really the gravitational potential. And now it all comes together and you see how geometry plays a roll in the theory of gravity.

The rest of the book is applications of Einstein's field equations to cosmology. The book also goes into black holes. These are the hardest sections of the book but again the book does such a good job of teaching you what you need, these sections also flow.

In order to get the full benefit from this book you must go through all the steps in the book. In reality most of it is just algebra. I also recommend supplementing this book with Schaum's outline on Tensor Calculus. A lot of people way more knowledgeable in the subject than I am have also recommended this book.

Relativity Demystified is another good book, but it takes a little different approach than this book. It uses Cartan's equations to calculate the Christoffel and Ricci Tensors, but a lot can be learned from doing things a different way. The method called one-forms is really important in learning other subjects. I really recommend Relativity Demystified to get a fuller background for when you read more advanced books. It has typo's and wrong equations in it, but you can find them.

After studying these three books you will be ready to read way more advanced books. These books also give the background required to understand QFT since it requires a very good understanding of Tensors and Relativity. A lot of people have trouble with QFT not because of their Quantum Mechanics skills but because of their lack of Tensor and Relativity skills.

When you are finished you will find General Relativity is not so hard, and there are really only a few ideas behind the whole subject. I always like to supplement textbooks with at least one or two other books. Finding the books that best supplement a books is sometime hard and I have helped you with two in-expensive books.

The book is mostly mathematics, exactly what it claims to be, with just enough narrative to keep the reader oriented. I completed my second pass through it, this time working through the math in detail with pencil and notepad. The exposition is tractable. The book is self-contained although vector calculus, partial differential equations, and linear algebra are necessary background. There are no problems to solve but after developing the mathematics, Chapter 19 presents the Schwarzschild solution in detail by applying basic results and illustrating how to organize the material to develop solutions. The does an excellent job of developing the mathematics associated with these subjects.

About the Author
Jeanette Roycraft got her start in art in elementary school, when she was drawing horses in class instead of doing class work. After taking art classes later in school, Jeanette went on to work in various careers, including education, manufacturing, and law enforcement before returning to her first loves—writing and design. Ms. Roycraft has had numerous books published under the pen name Jaye Roycraft and also has worked as a publisher’s assistant and copyeditor. Ms. Roycraft is the daughter of Roland Roycraft, an internationally-renowned award-winning watercolor artist, who has always been her inspiration.

DISAPPOINTING

Expected Much More from a book touted for horse lovers! Way too much 'artistic' squiggling. Geared towards those who want to fill in a bunch of tiny spaces with color. Some pictures don't even fill the page. Not happy with non-horse abstracts plus duplicate pictures. Save your money and get one of the Dover horse coloring books. I've printed better coloring pages off the Web for FREE.

I love this Adult Coloring Book ! Even as an adult, me and my sisters have our crayons and coloring books that we take on our vacations .... and have been doing this for years. But this book is so much more intricate and makes me use my imagination. This year, for Christmas, I purchased an Adult Coloring Book for my sisters and Mom. I think they will enjoy them like I do !! :) T
