Flowers are calling to all the animals of the forest, "Drink me!"—but it’s the pollinators who feast on their nectar. In rhyming poetic form and with luminous artwork, this book shows us the marvel of natural cooperation between plants, animals, and insects as they each play their part in the forest's cycle of life.

Beautiful Art, Odd but Kind of Interesting Combination of Fiction and Non-Fiction Elements
By Truthful Reviews
First, I love the cover of this book. It just looks so beautiful and festive and yet in nature!. The drawings throughout the book are equally beautiful as well. This is definitely a nonfiction book disguised as a children's rhyming book. It is an odd combination ta boot. Basically, you get 3 pages of cute rhymes about the flowers calling a mammal, then finding out the mammal really has no interest in flowers. But then the flower calls an insect, who definitely has an interest in flowers. After the three pages of rhymes, you have two pages of how those insects discussed in the previous three pages actually interact with flowers. It is interesting stuff. After that set is done. The book goes back to 3 more pages of mammals and insects followed by 2 pages of non-fiction. It is an odd jumbled way to tell a story or write a non-fiction book. But this is ultimately what makes the book unique and interesting. All in all I enjoyed the book. I think I would have rather seen the non-fiction part of the book toward the back all in one place. Rather than it breaking up the rhythm of the rhymes in the fiction part of the book.

Stunning art work, lovely message for people of all ages
By Quickbeam
I was urged to look at getting this book by a fellow rose grower who knew I grow old garden, "bee-o-philic" roses. It is just a wonderful combination of artistry and thought. What I love most about it is how universal the appeal is; a pre-verbal child can enjoy this as much as any adult. It is a rare joy to see a work this lovingly crafted with such wide audience draw. You won't regret owning "Flowers Are Calling".

As a result of a rigorous, methodical process that (ISC)² follows to routinely update its credential exams, it has announced that enhancements will be made to both the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) credential, beginning April 15, 2015. (ISC)² conducts this process on a regular basis to ensure that the examinations and subsequent training and continuing professional education requirements encompass the topic areas relevant to the roles and responsibilities of today’s practicing information security professionals.

Refreshed technical content has been added to the official (ISC)² CISSP CBK to reflect the most current topics in the information security industry today. Some topics have been expanded (e.g., asset security, security assessment and testing), while other topics have been realigned under different domains. The result is an exam that most accurately reflects the technical and managerial competence required from an experienced information security professional to effectively design, engineer, implement and manage an organization’s information security program within an ever-changing security landscape.

The domain names have been updated as follows:

CISSP Domains, Effective April 15, 2015

  • Security and Risk Management (Security, Risk, Compliance, Law, Regulations, Business Continuity)
  • Asset Security (Protecting Security of Assets)
  • Security Engineering (Engineering and Management of Security)
  • Communications and Network Security (Designing and Protecting Network Security)
  • Identity and Access Management (Controlling Access and Managing Identity)
  • Security Assessment and Testing (Designing, Performing, and Analyzing Security Testing)
  • Security Operations (Foundational Concepts, Investigations, Incident Management, Disaster Recovery)
  • Software Development Security (Understanding, Applying, and Enforcing Software Security)
  • Some candidates may be wondering how these updates affect training materials for the CISSP credential. As part of the organization’s comprehensive education strategy and certifying body best practices, (ISC)² training materials do not teach directly to its credential examinations. Rather, (ISC)² Education is focused on teaching the core competencies relevant to the roles and responsibilities of today’s practicing information security professional. It is designed to refresh and enhance the knowledge of experienced industry professionals.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND FIXED
    By D. Gillette
This very boring book is more for a security professional to have on his or her desk as a reference rather than a study tool for the CISSP exam. There is a LOT of material in it that you don't need to know for the exam. For example, DR is gone over in painstaking detail. That's fine, but the CISSP exam is a mile wide/inch deep, so you will end up wasting a lot of studying time. Also there is a lot of redundancy throughout the book so more wasted studying time.

My main beef with the book is that it's unnecessarily wordy and highbrow. Here's an example.

"Specifically, what the security architect needs to accomplish through the investment of this time is to gain a better understanding of the usage scenarios that each stakeholder brings to the system in question and what the intricacies of those scenarios are in order to perform a risk analysis against them, and as a result, he or she will gain a better understanding of the powerful threats and vulnerabilities to be addressed as part of any defenses that may be planned and implemented".

Good gawd, I almost fell asleep while typing that out. That sentence could easily be cut in half.

    Here's another example.

"Several common methods of cryptography exist including stream-based and block ciphers. The information security professional must have a basic understanding of both to ensure further understanding of encryption implementations."

The second sentence is unnecessary. It just adds weight to the book. There are a ton of sentences like that all throughout the book.

    One more.

"Computers are inherently designed for predictability not randomness. Computers are so thoroughly deterministic that they have a hard time generating high-quality randomness. Therefore, special purpose built hardware and software called "random number generators," or RNG's, are needed for cryptography applications. The U.S. federal government provides recommendations on deterministic random number generators through the NIST. An international standard for random number generation suitable for cryptographic systems is sponsored by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 18031. A rigorous statistical analysis of the output is often needed to have confidence in such RNG algorithms. A random number generator based solely on deterministic computation done solely by a computer cannot be regarded as a true random number generator sufficient in lack of predictability for cryptographic applications because its output is inherently predictable."

The last sentence is totally unnecessary. That was already stated in the first two sentences. I could give you many, many more examples but you get the picture.

The publisher must have wanted to get this book out quickly to capitalize on the new CISSP exam so they opted to skip proofreading.

    Here's some proof for you.

"Iris scanning is the most accurate biometric technology."
"Retina scan devices are probably the most accurate biometric available today".

That's 4 points down the drain if I get a question on the exam about the most accurate biometric.

    I especially love this one.

"Some areas to consider are actions such as planning for delivery of office supplies to the alternate site, setting up a package delivery account for the alternate site like UPS or Airborne...."

Airborne hasn't been around since 2003 when it got acquired by DHL.

Go with the latest Shon Harris book, she does a much better job of explaining the material. Although it doesn't reflect the new 8 domains, it still has everything you need to know to pass the latest CISSP exam, and you won't be bored to death.

I hope (ISC)2 puts out a revised version
    By Damien
After reading through the entire book, I am very disappointed with what I received for my money. The book appears as though it was put together in a hurry. I am missing 47 pages out of the middle of it (455 - 502), and there is a duplicate of the tail end of Domain 3 at the beginning of Domain 4. There are numerous spelling and grammatical errors, and one must hunt throughout the book to gather all of the information about a specific topic...as the index is extremely limited.

I am sending my copy back for a refund. I understand that (ISC)2 had to update the CBK, but they could have taken a little extra time for editing, or could have done a better job of planning ahead for a release that coincided with the April 2015 changes.

No sir, I don't like it.
    By josh
Just to make sure there was one less copy of this book in existence, I put a few 5.56 rounds through it (see photos). I thought about selling it, but the fact that I took money from someone in exchange for this book would weigh too heavy on my conscious.

Would not recommend. Author rambles too much about unneeded information. I'm a very studious person, but this book is INCREDIBLY difficult to read. The author will often use a paragraph to convey superfluous information instead of writing one concise sentence.

    ***For example***

Dogs are often bigger than cats.

    Vs

Dogs are often bigger than cats. Because of this, they require more food and water, as well as a larger living space. This results in increased costs and extra energy expenditure to facilitate an adequate living situation for the dogs. In some cases, dogs and cats are the same size. When this occurs, the maintenance expenditure is about the same for both dogs and cats.

I'm not joking or exaggerating about this example either.

As someone who is a member of Techexams and has studied for many IT certs and done thousands of practice questions, I can say the end-of-chapter questions are low quality as well. This book was obviously rushed and it's a shame because the cover is so beautiful.

Note to author/publishes/editors or whoever let this book reach the public: why would you do this? Is there a minimum page requirement issued by ISC2 or something?? If you're going to force a book to be 1400 pages, fill it with less trash and higher quality practice questions.

A deceptively good premise, an infuriating narrator and mediocre writing
    By The Book Eater
WARNING: This review contains mentions of wanting to throttle, strangle and maim book characters, and includes potentially traumatizing pictures.

Just look at this summary. Go ahead, read it.
It's amazing, isn't it? And the cover. It's gorgeous. The premise is mysterious, intriguing and lovely. I was SO excited for this book, you don't even know. I think my entire twitter feed knew the instant it was out.

This is why I'm going to be a little hard on it. Because my expectations were high, and there weren't met. At. All.

    About the narrator:

I wanted to violently shake her/strangle her for half the book (I'm usually a non-violent person). UGH. What a vapid, idiotic, insensitive, shallow, boring person. She's everything I hate in a character. No backbone, changing loyalties, and just this carelessness that I HATE.

"Sure, I'd been kicked out of school. I couldn't seem to go more than an hour without craving a caffeinated beverage. And a guy I'd met while I was dead had popped by unexpectedly and caused me to be slapped with a seven-figure civil suit.
But I was feeling positive about the future."

    ... Excuse me???
LOL my daddy has to pay more than a million dollars to a guy but I don't care!

    throttlesnarrator.jpg

    About the writing:

It draaaaaaaagged. She spent ages telling us about how she had been in the Underworld, and some bad "incident" had happened after she came back, but that the incident was different from the accident, and blablablablabla. My god, just get ON with it! The book is just so full of plot holes (like when Pierce loses her necklace, but somehow still has it around her neck?) and stilted, stretched out mock-obstacles.
Also, just like in The Goddess Test (which is also a retelling of the Persephone/Hades myth), the narrator keeps talking about "that". Apparently, spelling out the word sex is a capital offense.

Oh, and by the way, Pierce hates Greek mythology, because it's "complicated and weird and had nothing to do with reality." How the hell do you want me to empathize with her? Seriously? SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHO HOMER IS.

    About the romance:

It was ridiculous. And the love interest? His name is John. I don't even know what to say to that. He's a one-dimensional, pseudo swoon worthy "dark" guy that we didn't get to know at all. He behaved all aloof-like and jerky and moody and suddenly bam! His lips came came down over mine etc etc. Of course, the rest of the world ~vanished instantly. Eye roll.

One thing I learned from this book: tassels?
BAD. EVIL. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.

Needless to say, I would recommend this book to no one. I know it looks so good and you want to like it sooo bad, but... Yeah. No.

    Compelling Concepts, Weak Execution
    By Linnaly
On the surface, Abandon sounded GREAT - a dark retelling of the Persephone myth? Yes! Unfortunately, the book fails to deliver on the thrill - in large part, I think, because this is just the first book in the new Abandon series.

It takes half the book for Pierce to finally confirm everything that happened two years ago, when she had her near-death experience and a pivotal encounter with John, a death deity who seems to be in charge of the Underworld. Pierce is an incredibly coy narrator: she hints at the same things/events REPEATEDLY - and there seems to be no reason why she doesn't expand on her thought right then and there. It's well within the last 1/3 of the book where we finally get a confirmation of everything we've suspected, and not from Pierce but from an adult cemetery sexton, who gives us the explanation in this long chunk of dialogue.

Pierce means well, but her repetitive narration and the poor pacing of the story/unfolding of events made this book difficult for me to emotionally engage with. I do like the glimpse we get of John (unfortunately, he doesn't actually appear much in this book) - he is incredibly intriguing. The Underworld and elements of Greek mythology isn't fully explored here, but what is hinted as is a nice take, and I will probably pick up the second book, Underworld, when it comes out.

    Very disappointed!
    By Misha
Writing this review actually make me sad and guilty because I hate writing anything negative about a Meg Cabot book. I first discovered Princess Diaries when I was 11 years old and fell instantly in love with Meg Cabot's books. I loved the Princess Diaries series and the Mediator series even more! I haven't a read a Meg Cabot book since I was around 16, but I have happy memories of her books. Now I just wish I had not read Abandon, just so I could preserve those memories.

Abandon is a new take on the Hades-Persephone myth. Pierce, the main protagonist, finds herself in the "Underworld" similar to that of Hades', after she nearly drowns. There she meets John, whom she had previously met at her grandfather's funeral when she was a little kid. She somehow manages to escape the Underworld, but John seems to appear everywhere she goes, especially when she's in trouble. She can't seem to escape from him. After an incident, she moves to an island where her mother's family lives. However, trouble seems to follow her there too..

When I first read the synopsis for the book, I nearly fainted from excitement. The premise seemed so enticing; and I was sure it was going to be as amazing as The Mediator series. The reality? The synopsis is actually hundred times more exciting than the book. I feel really deceived! Nothing actually happens throughout the book. Most of the book is about how Pierce landed in the Underworld and how she escaped from it; and her previous meetings with John. I kept waiting for something even remotely exciting to happen, but the book finished and nothing happened.

I would not have minded the lack of a plot, if the character development was well done. However, every character is one-dimensional. I cannot remember liking a single character. As for Pierce, I hated her! There is not one likable quality about her.The only words I can use for her is - Spoilt brat! She's selfish, shallow, hypocritical and appears to be lacking a brain. She is portrayed as being someone who is not materialistic, yet she does and say stuff which makes her exactly so. When she gets into trouble, she says things like "You want money? Fine! My father will give it to you" . (Please keep in mind that's not an actual quote from the book). Her father ends up with a seven figure lawsuit due to Pierce's actions, but her reaction to it is as if it's an amusing thing. As in - "Haha How funny that I caused my father to be sued for seven million!" Seriously! Througout the book, it's been repeated again and again how "caring" she is. I just don't see it! None of her actions make her look "caring".

I don't know what to say about John because I know nothing about him. He's just another one of those generic dark, "bad boy" love interests with a tragic past. I do not understand how Pierce falls for him, considering that she seems to hate him for the most part. John gets angry often, sometimes violently angry and aggressive. He even tries to keep Pierce in the underworld against her wishes. He creeped me out and frightened me, but didn't make me go weak at the knees (as I suppose I was expected to?)

I missed sweet, awkward Mia from Princess Diaries and snarky, kick-ass Susannah from The Mediator; I missed the humor that sets Meg Cabot's books apart; I missed Jesse (from The Mediator) and Michael (from Princess Diaries) who were truly swoon-worthy.

    Overall:
It saddens me to say so about a Meg Cabot book, but it has every element that annoys me in a YA PNR novel:
    - Annoying main protagonist who makes me want to inflict some kind of violence on her (and believe me I am not a violent person!)
    - Dark dangerous love interest (I suppose he was supposed to make me swoon, but he only made me yawn - he was that boring!)
    - Actual Plot = Nil

I wanted to give this book one star. The extra star is because of how much I used to love the author's books.

    No-nonsense, old fashion Weightlifting
    By Mohamed F. El-Hewie
My first impression when I opened a light and skinny envelop of the delivered book was that of opening some business correspondence letter. The book is only 132 pages, of black and weight print that could be produced on a home printer, the era preceding of hp-laser or inkjet. Though the first edition came in 1997, it immediately revived my memory of the struggle to print and publish my own book on those days. It is a painful experience for authors to meddle with so many hurdles in order to get their information to the reader. Then, there is my bias in favor of a fellow weightlifter attempting to maintain a dying sport form retiring to history archives.

In total contravention to the inclusive format of Drechsler's Weightlifting Encyclopedia and El-Hewie's Essentials of Weightlifting and Strength Training, Cissik sticks to the hardcore of old fashion Weightlifting. The classical two lifts; Clean and Jerk and Snatch, are described, together with their immediate supporting exercises. The back, front, and overhead squat; deadlift with various handgrips and height of pull; goodmorning in standing, seating, and ground positions; pullover, and stretching is all that trainees need to advance in weightlifting. That is a bold and daring confrontation of appealing consumerism that thrives on promoting expensive machines, fancy exercise accessories, and endless exercises that do little, if any, good to fitness.

The simplicity, clarity, and accuracy of Cissik's Introduction outweighs it poor production quality and attests to the author's courage to stand tall on substance. Although, the book is intended as an introduction, the above mentioned attributes make the book practical and convenient for modern day busy people. In addition, each chapter begins with neat tabulated highlights and basic contents and ends with a list of references. Inside the chapters, the author places the reference citation where needed in every page.

    Its drawbacks are:

    (1) Complete omission of individualized peripheral training exercises. Modern weightlifters rival bodybuilders; on bulk and definition, and powerlifters; on peak isometric strength. Many young weightlifters could not attain the astronomically high level of modern international records because of lack of muscular bulk. Cissik's old fashion training emphasizes the technique of lifting and periodization for robust, explosive power, yet falls short on massing slow twitching muscle fibers. Those require dedicated bodybuilding training during off season or prior to committing to protracted competitive weightlifting career.

The fear that bodybuilding and powerlifting exercises would do away with the mental skill, specific to the explosive full range of motion and highly coordinated dynamics of weightlifting, is well understood and recognized by experienced lifters and coaches. However, modern lifters have sufficient resources to ease the highly toned and acutely inflamed structures caused by such repetitive and depleting modes of exercising. Yoga, Pilates, Stretch, UV booths, saunas, and massage are few such modern remedies for the side effects of strengthening through controlled motion exercising. That however raises the stakes of heart and cellular reserves. Could the heart tolerate multiple overloads? Could the cellular metabolism adapt its enzymatic machinery to oppositely demanding activities? or, could the trainee have access to adequate health knowledge in dealing with such double sword training modes? Cissik's answer is: simplicity; a wise, safe, and practical choice.

    (2) Jumping straight in the air during the pull isn't scientific. Although few great lifters do jump, the laws of mechanics forbid jumping. It wastes energy. Explosive extension isn't synonymous with jumping. Cissik is rightfully insisting on not spreading the feet sideways, yet wrongfully advises jumping. Jumping might be stimulating, yet wasteful.

    (3) The deep squat during the amortization phase portrays to some that "deep" is a requirement for lifting. It is better to emphasize that squatting should be as high as it is needed to catch the barbell at its (the barbell) final destination. Unnecessarily deep squat should be reserved for training, stretching, and strengthening.

    Excellent Book!
    By chipkent@tamu.edu
This book is MUCH better than the first edition. The beginning of the book is a concise description of the Olympic exercises and associated assistance exercises. This is good for the beginning lifter. The second half of the book is on workout design. It is EXCELLENT and draws heavily on EASTERN EUROPEAN texts (They always have the best lifters!). The book is worth buying for this section. Powerlifters and fitness buffs can use the principles outlined here to greatly improve their progress. Every chapter is heavily referenced for those who are interested in learning more.

    A Rare Find
    By W. Chill
There are not many books published on the sport of Olympic and Olympic-style lifting as the sport's popularity has dropped steadily since the American dominance in the 1960's when the great Tommy Kono was on the lifting platform. I was hard-pressed to find many books on the sport, but was delighted when I found this one. Cissik does a good job of explaining the complicated techniques involved in the various Olypic (style) lifts. As one who never did the lifts but is trying to learn how, this book is spot on. Learning such moves without the aid of a coach is extremely difficult, but Cissik's explanations and photos are the next best thing to live instruction or even video. He also gives the reader sample programs and routines to follow to get ready for lifting competition. The book is no high-tech glossy, but a real world, down and dirty manual for learning the sport. The print, presentation, and format of the book has an almost scholarly feel, perhaps even unconsciously so which seems fitting considering where the sport of Olympic Lifting now resides in contemporary America.

A Michael L. Printz Honor Book

Troy Billings is seventeen, 296 pounds, friendless, utterly miserable, and about to step off a New York subway platform in front of an oncoming train. Until he meets Curt MacCrae, an emaciated, semi-homeless, high school dropout guitar genius, the stuff of which Lower East Side punk rock legends are made. Never mind that Troy’s dad thinks Curt’s a drug addict and Troy’s brother thinks Troy’s the biggest (literally) loser in Manhattan. Soon, Curt’s recruited Troy as his new drummer—even though Troy can’t play the drums. Together, Curt and Troy will change the world of punk, and Troy’s own life, forever.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up-The opening lines of this first-person narrative immediately hook readers as they enter the lonely, troubled, self-deprecating world of Troy Billings, a 296-pound 17-year-old who contemplates ending his life by jumping off a New York City subway platform. He is interrupted by Curt MacCrae, a legendary punk-rock guitarist and sometime-student at W. T. Watson High School. When Curt connects with him and "saves his life," Troy is amazed that someone, especially someone as cool as Curt, wants to befriend him. An unlikely, almost symbiotic relationship develops between these two. Curt convinces Troy to be the drummer in his band, even though he hasn't touched the drums since seventh grade. He is flattered by the suggestion and believes that being in the band could be his key to acceptance. Troy's voice is candid, irreverent, realistic, and humorous. He imagines the events of his life in facetious headlines always related to his weight. Curt himself is the product of a dysfunctional family, and he has plenty of problems of his own, including a reliance on drugs. Going has created three-dimensional characters whose behavior rings true. There are many unexpected twists and turns, including the horrifying and hysterically gross depiction of Troy's first gig. Fans of Joyce Carol Oates's Big Mouth & Ugly Girl (HarperCollins, 2002) will love this wonderful, engrossing tale.

    From Booklist
Gr. 8-12. His name is Troy, but to the world--and in his internal dialogues--he is the Fat Kid. Really Fat. Almost 300 pounds of sweating, unhappy insecurity. Then out of a moment of despair comes magic. As Troy considers whether to splatter himself on a subway track, Curt MacCrae, a charismatic punk rocker/homeless kid/dropout, comes along and stops him. For the price of a meal, Curt befriends Troy, and he sees something under all those layers: a potential musician, a friend, and someone with the ability to see through life's bull. First-time novelist Going has put together an amazing assortment of characters. Troy is the ultimate fat kid, the kind whose every move, every thought is predicated on what it is like to wear a coat of blubber. Curt, as thin as Troy is fat, is a combination of Kurt Cobain, Ratso Rizzo, and a fairy godfather. He sprinkles Troy with the dirt and grime of punk rock and brings out the prince hiding inside the weight (to the book's credit, Troy doesn't get any thinner). Equally well drawn are the lesser characters, including Troy's father, a former Marine with an innate sense of what kids need. The narrative could have been tighter in places, but this is an impressive debut that offers hope for all kids--dross transmuted into gold. Ilene Cooper

    Going ... Going ... Gone!!
    By J.D. Wise
"I'm ready to give him full credit and be on my way, mosey along to contemplate some new nonfunny form of suicide (FAT KID GETS HIT BY A BUS?), but the blond ferret stands up and extends a grimy hand.
"Curt MacCrae," he says. That's when I just about piss my pants.
Curt MacCrae is a legend at W.T. Watson High School. He's the only truly homeless, sometimes student, sometimes dropout, punk rock, artist god among us."
K.L. Going's Fat Kid Rules the World is an engaging, page-turning read from a new author on the Young Adult scene. Troy Billings (a.k.a. the Fat Kid) is 6' 1", weighs 300 pounds, and spends most of his waking hours trying to determine how to end what he sees as his useless life. The novel begins with Troy contemplating sucide in a Manhattan subway station, only to be interrupted by Curt MacCrae and presented with Curt's vision for Troy's future: "Big T" will become the drummer in Curt's punk rock band, Rage/Tectonic. The catch? Troy can't play the drums to save his life, but, to Curt, that's no big deal.
Over the course of 183 pages (Hardcover Edition), Going takes a deep look at the impact of life, death, obesity, family dysfunction, drug abuse, and the love of music on two high school seniors. The narrative moves along quickly, with some chapters as short as two or three paragraphs. Going's characters are multi-dimensional -- both flawed and passionate -- lending a strong, realistic tone to the story. The interactions between Troy; Curt; Troy's younger brother, Dayle; Troy's father (an ex-Marine now working as a security consultant); and Curt's mother and stepfather are eerily true to life for many young adults who have lost parents or come from broken homes.
Fat Kid is definitely a Young Adult novel, suited for readers aged 15 and above. Parents who monitor their children's reading tastes should be aware that Going's language reflects High School in the 21st Century, with somewhat liberal usage of cursing, not-so-vague descriptions of sexual situations, a quick (and needless) swipe at "born-again Christians," and a very true to life picturization of the punk rock scene. Fat Kid also deals with drug abuse (including prescription and OTC medicines), loss of a parent, and homelessness. Language and sexuality aside, Going has crafted a marvelous debut novel that should spark intense discussions among teens, their peers, and (hopefully) parents about self-image, self-acceptance, health and well-being, and family dynamics.
    Highly recommended.

Richie's Picks: FAT KID RULES THE WORLD
    By N. S.
"I'm a sweating fat kid standing on the edge of the subway platform staring at the tracks. I'm seventeen years old, weigh 296 pounds, and I'm six foot one. I have a crew cut, yes a crew cut, sallow skin, and the kind of mouth that puckers when I breathe. I'm wearing a shirt that reads MIAMI BEACH--SPRING BREAK 1997, and huge, bland tan pants--the only kind of pants I own. Eight pairs, all tan."
As this head-bashing-yet-really-sweet-tale hits its first screeching chord progression, seventeen year-old Troy Billings contemplates jumping in front of an approaching subway train. A once average-sized child, he has eaten his way through years of depression after the death of his mother. Raised by his father, who is a retired military officer, and having experienced unrelenting contempt from a younger brother, who is a popular jock, Troy is certain that everyone is constantly eyeing him and laughing.
"First, the train is coming, its single headlight illuminating the dark tracks. I hear its deep rumble and take the fateful step forward. I want to picture myself flying dramatically through the air but realize I wouldn't have the muscle power to launch my body. Instead, I would plummet straight down. Maybe I wouldn't even get my other leg off the platform--my weight would pull me down like an anchor. That's how I see it."
But Troy does not jump. Or plummet. His plans are rudely interrupted by the "disembodied voice" of a skinny teenager--Curt MacCrae--who is sitting in the dark behind him.
"He looks like a blond ferret. Stringy unwashed hair and huge eyes, jeans that are barely recognizable, stained white T-shirt, huge red overshirt, ratty old sweater...The sneakers, one Converse and one Nike, are both untied and the layers are all partially buttoned even though it's got to be one hundred degrees in the subway. The guy is so filthy I can hardly look at him. I mean, he's caked--looks like an old war victim from some black and white film."
Curt, this majorly poor example of good hygiene, is a homeless, locally legendary punk guitarist who disappeared from the high school Troy attends. He is also a walking pharmacy. (He believes in self-inflicted health care.) Curt demands lunch from Troy for saving his life, and then informs the enormous young man that he, Troy, is to be the drummer in Curt's new band--a duo named Rage/Tectonic. That Troy has not played the drums since junior high is irrelevant--at least to Curt.
As Troy tries to conceive of a different self-image for himself and tries to overcome his paralyzing fears of what he believes everyone else is thinking of him, Curt's dicey health and his dicey relationship with Troy's dad and brother Dayle kept me alternately holding my breath and laughing so hard that I could barely catch it. Though much of Curt's on-the-fringe lifestyle remains an enigma to both Troy and to us, we do get vivid glimpses of the grunge and the glamor associated with being a teenage punk musician.
" 'You are punk rock, T. You just don't know it yet, and I don't know how to convince you.' "
FAT KID RULES THE WORLD is totally phat! While the joyfulness and quirkiness of the story and the body image issue may allow for grouping this book with some others you've read before, K. L. Going is truly a new voice on the YA scene.

Troy knows that everyone is watching him. And laughing at him. Of course they are. At seventeen years old and almost 300 pounds, wearing what appears to be the same pair of tan pants daily, every move he makes is laughable. Will he be able to get out of the car? How many burgers will he eat? Even his effort to breathe is laughable as he huffs and puffs his way along.

He worries that he smells. You don't understand. It's not that he's a pig or anything, he just has a hard time fitting in the shower.

Poised over the subway tracks, Troy contemplates whether he can find a form of suicide that will be so serious, so severe, that no one will laugh. Enter Curt. Semi-homeless teen, school dropout, legend at his high school, and uber amazing guitar player, Curt attaches himself to Troy after saving him from the tracks. He's an itch that can't be scratched, a tick burrowing under the skin. Before Troy realizes it, he's agreed to buy Curt dinner and join his band as a drummer, even though he hasn't played since seventh grade.

Who is he kidding? He can't do this. He sees it in the eyes of his perfect kid brother, Dayle, as well as his military dad, the "disappointed dysfunctional parent."

But with Curt's help, Troy learns to look past himself. He finds support in unexpected places. But it's not until Curt is hospitalized that Troy finally has the guts to really take a risk.

This is a fast-paced book. K. L. Going immerses the reader in the world of punk rock through the eyes of the fat kid who yearns to have people really look at him. She has a great sense of humor that shines with lines of comparison, like when Troy compares himself to Dayle before the big gig. Troy thinks Dayle looks like he's "ready to win the Super Bowl, while I'm ready to heave into one." Ms. Going does an amazing job of getting into the psyche of the fat kid. There is a fair amount of rough language, but even so, this book rocks!

Peopled with “ambassadors from the Netherworld”—the orphaned and abused, the lost and addicted—Cruz leads us through this “traveling minstrel show / Called girlhood—” which is at once tragic and magical.

    Review
“Each writer’s new collection is a bracing meditation on mortality...Ms. Cruz’s poems are an ecstatic overdose of language and emotion...Her razor-wire stanzas in The Glimmering Room, even better than her fine debut, Ruin (Alice James Books, 2006), are full of too-young desolation angels, ‘the other almost-girls’ and ‘the boys who want to die.’...This powerful poetry is a heart offering by way of Ms. Cruz’s ancestor-sisters Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath.”—Dana Jennings, New York Times Review

    Review
“…to read these poems is to continually plummet…The Glimmering Room is a savage and stunningly coherent collection that turns the so-called ‘post-confessional’ mode on its head.” (Cate Marvin)

“Cruz’s characters…are perpetually on the edge of oblivion. Only the intensity and sympathy of Cruz’s attention keeps them from passing over into disaster.” (Joel Brouwer)

    Painful
    By Mariam
When I was reading these poems (filled with drugs, violence, pain, sex, hospitals, confusion) I found myself re-living every agonizing moment in my life. I was just so in tune with the troubled psyche of the narrator and my own. It was really interesting for me to meet the author, Cynthia Cruz, because she is not anything like what you imagine when you read her poems. I thought she was going to be this goth chick with wild hair and dark circles under her eyes. She was actually one of the sweetest and gentlest poets I have ever met. So I liked her poems, but I just can't rate them 5 stars because it was really hard for me to read them all in one sitting. They put me in a really dark place.

    Der Blaue Reiter
    By mrc
In Cruz’s The Glimmering Room there becomes a bridge from one version of existence to another. Some places are uncomfortable and a little scary. Metaphor and image become primary and visceral, beautiful and abrupt. These poems are Night Train meets creation, and each poem gives more with each reading, a Der Blaue Reiter impressionistic gift. Die Brücke.

Cruz’s poems are singular and powerful and original. This is an important book by a gifted artist.

Exciting step into the danger zone
By Gregg Taylor Banter author of Wolves and Wildflowers
These poems ride the dangerous rails between beauty and decadence . Or is it the magical beauty bof debauchery that Cruz is able and talented enough to pull off. An exciting step into the danger zone. An attention to the color and bueaty of language , an attention to the beauty of the rhythm of the language . Lean as can be, yet containing the whole story.

    Review

"If I had to choose a single book to share with a faculty member about how to design and teach an online or blended course, or with an instructional designer partnering with that faculty member, that book would be Essentials of Online Course Design: A Standards-Based Guide, Second Edition. In this concise, clear, and well-written volume, Marjorie Vai and Kristen Sosulski provide a methodology for online and blended course design that is informed by learning theory and seasoned by practical experience. This is the standard reference guide that those of us involved in online and blended learning will be keeping close at hand."

Excellent new version of the original
    By Harry G. Chernoff
Excellent new version of the original. The issues are clear and interesting. For everyone that has been teaching in the traditional classroom, this book shows the way to transition to an online or blend curriculum. In fact, it even helps with the continuing design of the traditional model.
For the experienced online instructor, it will supply the one or two missing elements that you have been looking for.

“Complete” is the best word to describe the scope of this book
    By Bancha Srikacha
“Complete” is the best word to describe the scope of this book. It covers everything from high-level rationales for designing an online course to best practices in document design. Guidelines for producing audio and video media are also included. The companion website, Essentials of Online Course Design (http://essentialsofonlinecoursedesign.com/), adds an extra dimension to the book, offering additional resources for deeper exploration.

It’s an excellent and easy-to-understand introduction for educators on how to make sense of and effectively use LMSs at their institutions. Even if not teaching online, the strategies in this book are an extension of core sound teaching principles that any instructor will be able to apply to create effective technology-enhanced teaching and learning experiences.
