The Mormon Tabernacle Enquirer: Latter-Day News, Advice, and Opinion, by Paul Allen

Mormons, you gotta love 'em--from the gingham baskets full of scones they leave on your doorstep (along with the Book of Mormon and a hand-made card), to their odd beverage rules (hot chocolate, yes; coffee, no), members of this fast-growing religion can be found in every neighborhood, workplace, Dollar Store, Costco, and ... well, perhaps not in every tavern. This book provides an affectionate laugh at a religion that has its share of odd customs, beliefs and practices. From the training of missionaries to the rearing of its fine and moral young women, Mormonism can be taken oh-so seriously, or, how we prefer it: with a twist of humor.

From Publishers Weekly
If a mature religion is one that can laugh at itself, then Mormonism is growing up. The ranks of the heretofore slim world of LDS satirists (dominated by cartoonists Pat Bagley and Calvin Grondahl and columnist Robert Kirby) have been swelled by the next generation: this compilation of ruthlessly funny articles is as irreverent as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is decorous. The book is edited by Bigelow, coauthor of Mormonism for Dummies and cofounder of the Sugar Beet (an LDS version of the satirical publication the Onion). Bigelow and his staff of Sugar Beet writers, whose identities are hidden behind ultra-Mormon pseudonyms, ferret out the delicious humor tucked away in Mormonism's quirkiest doctrines and cultural extremes in articles like "Gay polygamists make bid for legitimacy"; "Zions Bank offers financing for scrapbookers"; and "Elvis Presley accepts posthumous baptism." The humor grows mostly out of the rich soil of Wasatch Front culture, so some of it may go over the heads of converts to the faith, and many stalwart Mormons would declare the writing dangerously "light-minded." But a solid core of LDS (and LDS-raised) readers will find The Enquirer a tie-loosening, glue-gun melting pleasure—and an excellent Christmas gift for friends and family. (Nov. 6)

From the Back Cover
Are you a Mormon observer who's curious about what really goes on deep inside the LDS culture? Or are you a Mormon insider who suspects you're not getting the full story from KSL, the Deseret Morning News, and the Ensign news section?

Now, there's a news source for you. Staffed by a team of crack reporters, The Mormon Tabernacle Enquirer reports stories that are too offbeat, dangerous, and worst of all--inappropriate for the mainstream new outlets. Here's a brief sampling:

SpongeBob Receives Mission Call

BYU Offers Scrapbooking Degree

Poll Reveals Majority of Men "Highly Satisfied" with Patriarchy

Gay Polygamists Make Bid for Legitimacy

All-Seeing Eye Proposed for Church Office Building

Gladys Knight to Release "Midnight Train to Kolob"

Advice from Mahonri the Mormon Psychic

Not only does this volume collect some of the best reportage from The Sugar Beet website and newsletter (a Mormon version of The Onion), but it also features all-new punctuation and new material that's never appeared elsewhere.

Like the Onion, but More Appropriate!

Oh my heck! This is Mormon beach reading without equal. Especially Mormons who might not feel TOO guilty about reading on the beach on Sunday. It's a funny, satirical, insiders view of Mormonism and the culture it has created. Written in the newsy style of The Onion, the Mormon Tabernacle Enquirer takes a peek (and a gentle poke) at the quirks of missionaries, the Relief Society, youth programs and more, and anyone who has ever regularly spent at least 3 hours of every Sunday in a chapel in Utah will know EXACTLY what these people are talking about. You'll giggle, you'll laugh, but you'll also say to yourself, "Yup, by golly, that's us..."

The Mormon Tabernacle Enquirer

This hilarious send-up of tabloid journalism and Utah Mormon "culture" will have you laughing until you cry. However, one caveat for non-mo's: it's pretty much a gigantic series of inside jokes.

One of our favorite books from the very witty LDS writers of
"The Sugar Beet."
