About the Author
Dr DINH-VAN NGUYEN graduated from Medical School, University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) in 1980. From 1980 to 1990, he was instructor of Ben-Tre Middle School of Health, physician-in-Chief of Tinh-Bien District Hospital, and anesthesiologist of Central General Hospital of An-Giang province (Vietnam). Immigrated to Canada in 1991, he was retrained and got a diploma of Respiratory and Anesthesia Technology from Vanier College (Quebec) in 1995, and BScN from University of Ottawa (Ontario) in 2000. Working in the Ottawa Hospital (2000-2002) then with VON Ottawa and Carefor Health & Community Services (2002-2016). Certified member of the Canadian Vascular Access Association since 2012.

Đây là quyển sách rất hữu ích cho người hành nghề y ở Việt nam muốn biết các bệnh viện ở Mỹ dùng tiếng Anh như thế nào. Ví dụ các từ viết tắt được sử dụng rất nhiều để viết các y lệnh cũng như để ghi hồ sơ lưu trử. Tôi lấy ví dụ bác sĩ cho y lệnh “Sliding scale AC&HS, regular insulin, standard dose”, hay “Zofran 4mg PRN for N/V”. Nếu không học trước chắc chắn sẽ rất khó khăn để hiểu. Các từ tắt y khoa trong tiếng Anh có rất nhiều, không thể học hết trong thời gian ngắn. Cái ta cần nhất là cái thông dụng thì tác giả đã đưa vào sách khá đầy đủ và giải thích cặn kẻ. Đối với ai muốn thi vào làm nội trú ở Mỹ thì quyển sách này rất cần cho phần thi về kỹ năng lâm sàng: khám bệnh, hỏi bệnh, và viết bệnh án.

I purchased this book last year to help study for my Estate and Gift Tax exam in December 2011. I read it from cover to cover before my exam and it was a great refresher of the materials we covered in class.

You'll probably want to switch to the next edition of the book, especially for 2013, because of all the changes taking effect in January will make some of the information in this edition (portability, the annual exclusion amount, etc.) outdated.

The events in Jet Age Man took place during the early Cold War, an era that will go down as a period when civilization teetered on the edge of the abyss. To some, nuclear deterrence appeared as utter madness, and was in fact commonly referred to as M.A.D. The concept of Mutually Assured Destruction provoked protests and marches, and the architect of M.A.D, General Curtis LeMay, became a symbol of madness himself.

Raised during those turbulent times, most contemporary historians conclude that we were lucky to have survived. What they fail recognize is that for LeMay and the thousands of Cold War warriors who fought and won while serving in the Strategic Air Command, the proof of concept lies not in the "what if?" but in the reality, "what did." Historically, M.A.D. succeeded where appeasement, diplomacy and even hot wars failed. When The Wall came down, strength, not weakness, had prevailed.

Most of this story takes place in the Cold War trenches of the Strategic Air Command. It is about those who served and the many who died, told by someone who, as a young man, literally held the fate of all mankind within reach of a switch. More particularly, this is a story of man's interaction with two bombers that changed the course of political history, and were perhaps the most influential aircraft in the annals of aircraft development.

The author piloted and instructed in both the B-47 and the B-52, starting out as a copilot in the B-47, then aircraft commander and finally, instructor pilot in both aircraft. Jet Age Man chronicles his fifteen-year relationship with the B-47 and the aircraft the B-47 became, the B-52--a bomber still in service today.

About the Author

After winning his pilot's wings in December 1950, the author flew 28 missions as a B-29 copilot in the Korean War. His next assigned aircraft was the RB-47E six-engine jet reconnaissance bomber. During his six-year SAC assignment at Forbes AFB, Kansas, he advanced from copilot to instructor, and in 1960 transitioned to B-52s at Castle AFB, California. He, his wife and three sons moved to El Paso and later to Fort Worth, Texas where he logged over 3,000 hours as aircraft commander and instructor pilot in B-52s. In nine years he flew eighteen airborne alert missions and shuttled back and forth to the island of Guam fourteen times. He survived the Cuban Missile Crisis, nuclear ground and airborne alert, and a stint in the Vietnam War to retire from the Air Force in 1969. He and his wife of 59 years have lived in Arizona for the last 42.

Experience fascinating forgotten history

Suprisingly little has been written about this important facet of the Cold War. This book, painstakingly accurately researched, brings the reader squarely in the middle of the dangers inherent to flying on the bleeding edge of technology. The B47 was a tradeoff of the lives of the best and brightest for a technological edge against the Russian. The author follows this with stories and experience of when we got it right, the B52. Throw in some intrigue, atomic weapons and some insane flying requirements, and you have a book you can't put down.

A great read, provides insight in SAC operations

I had earlier read Mr. McGill's Black Tuesday over Namsi and think that it is an outstanding book on USAF Bomber Operations in Korea. Jet Age Man continues where he left off by providing his history and perspective of the early days of jet operations in SAC. I grew up listening to stories of my grandfather, a gunner in B-17s, B-29s in Korea, and in B-52s. I myself am close to finishing a 20 year career as a pilot in the US Navy, and have flown the P-3C, which is the closest you could get to B-29s and B-52s in the Navy, as well as a modern Boeing jet, the C-40A (B-737). From both perspectives I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and it has given me some important background in understanding my grandfathers service, and as a 737 pilot it was extremely interesting in reading how these early big jet pilots discovered the hard way on how to operate them without the glass cockpit of today. These pioneers made a large contribution to the safety of todays airliners. If you have any interest in B-47s, B-52s, UASF history, or just plain old flying stories, you will not be disappointed. Our heros from WW2 got plenty of attention in the history books, and rightfully so, their Korean counterparts not as much. The early cold war operations are nearly forgotten and as time passes and these heros age, these memories will be lost. Thanks to LT COL. McGill for documenting his experiences for future generations.

Flying the Boeing Jet Bombers from the beginning

Lt Col (Retired) McGill has herein penned the gold standard book about the B-47 and B-52 bombers and how they made Strategic Air Command into the world's foremost deterrent to World War III. Having served twice in SAC during the Cold War, guarding Priority A KC-135 tankers at Malmstrom AFB and nuclear alert B-52s and their Weapons Storage Area at Ellsworth AFB, and having been near the receiving end of several B-52 Arc Light strikes in a Hot War in Viet Nam, I was amazed at how much I learned from this book about how these planes really fit into the grand scheme of keeping the Soviets at bay. Col McGill is a meticulous, entertaining and authentic writer and person...he is unfailingly honest about what he did in these capable, but often dangerous planes, and he spares neither praise nor criticism for the aircraft and those who crewed them when they did truly brave deeds or things that got them killed. His stories about the B-47 and chronology of their tortured history as crew killers, in particular, allow the reader to grasp the absolute professionalism it took to fly a plane that was always looking for a way to kill you. He carefully details all the B-47 and B-52 crashes during his tenure, from 1956 through 1968. This is not just a wonderful history, it is an awesome story.

About the Author
Mark Griep is a chemistry professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he studies the function of the enzymes that duplicate DNA in bacteria. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Dr. Griep received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and was twice elected to serve as the Chair of the Nebraska Section of the American Chemical Society. He has been studying his family history since age 13 and was delighted to be able to begin investigating Marjorie's family history after they were married. Marjorie Mikasen is a geometric painter who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally; awards include an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council and the Lincoln Mayor's Arts Award for Artistic Achievement in the Visual Arts. Her work is in public and private collections including the Sheldon Museum of Art. Mikasen was able to whistle from an early age and likes to think her ancestor Joseph Maffre had the same ability.

For those interested in the musical life of mid-1800s Montreal, a new book has recently appeared filling a gap in the history of the city. Authors
and spouses, Marjorie Mikasen and Mark Griep, have written "Joseph Maffre: Master of the Band". Their book delves into Maffre's life with a
particular focus on his years in Montreal between 1838 and 1849 as a prominent musician and composer in Montreal.

Joseph and his parents fled their country of birth - France, for England where the young man first developed his musical talents before coming to
Canada as the Master of the Band of the 71st Regiment. This was early in the evolution of British military bands and masters from the Continent were much preferred to British-borne musicians.

citizenry was keen to take music lessons. This fledgling musical life was significantly nourished by military bands. The authors have found many examples of newspaper ads about forth-coming concerts in city churches and halls where the 71st Regiment's band, under Maffre's leadership, often played.

Upon leaving the army, Maffre continued as a band leader, but he also returned to composing, publishing and teaching music. With his French
roots, it's not surprising that his compositions - often quadrilles, reflected music and dancing styles from his homeland as well as being inspired by his Canadian experience. Both in his religious practices within the family and in his musical activities, he clearly moved between Montreal's Catholic and Protestant and English and French communities in providing entertainment for the citizens.

Maffre and his English-born wife, Lucy, had ten children - some of whom followed their Father into a musical life in Montreal and environs. Joseph
and Lucy passed away within days of one another during the Montreal cholera epidemic of 1849.

Mikasen - a distant relation to Maffre, and Griep devoted spare time and holidays over twenty-five years to researching this book - and this
commitment and diligence show. They have delved into marriage, baptismal and death records in Corsica, Britain and Canada, read through newspapers published during Maffre's years in various cities and searched trans-Atlantic archives for copies of Maffre's music, pictures and maps of places where he lived, and details about his military service and the musicians with whom he played.

It's a significant work of history which a British expert on the minimally explored field of the history of British military bands has described as
"one of the most important contributions" to this field. For this reviewer - another distant relative of Joseph and Lucy, it was a fascinating and
revealing read about their lives.

Perfect guide for someone who wants to continue their work out routine or simply wants to start it. For athletes, this book is a great motivator; it's exactly what they need to perfect their bodies and keep fighting to bettetr their skills in training for a certain sport. For the ordinary bum like me, it's also a great motivator to get off the couch, turn off the computer and start moving the body your mother gave you.

Yes, I agree that it is merely a book with all of the exercises that you might find online. But how much time will it take you to gather and recompile all from online sources? Besides, the online sources do not provide a good categorization or grouping as this book does. I love the book due to its simplicity and organization.
